I was wondering what you guys thought of this novel written by Elie Wiesel- Night (his wifes translation). It deals with his experience of being taken from his Transylvanian village by the NAZI's during WW1, and transported to Auschwitz, and details of the horror's of those camps. I recently read this novel, and it has really changed the way I see the current state of affiars in some parts of the world- and indeed, large chunks of history. For this story to be true, as it is, is THE book for the human race IMO. Never has such utter darkness- or the Kingdom of Night as Wiesel puts it- descended on humanity...

To forgot for one second that human beings comitted the Holocaust; indeed, the entire world who said and did nothing until it was too late; is a grievous error, as it is one of the truest depictions of reality gone wrong.

Elie Wiesel said:
Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky.
Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.
Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never
.

The story is oddly written, in that he often refers to himself as "we", but you get the feeling of the herd and animal unity that the Jews had during that last year, that was forcecd on them by the Holocaust. The SS were literally throwing infants and children directly into a furnace on the night of his arrival to Auschwitz....

Unbearably painful and moving. I cannot believe that this atrocity happpened to one single boy, let alone millions.

God have mercy on us, or at least remember your children :(
