I have read reports and seen the scale that shows Alcohol above MDMA in terms of addiction and damage potential, but what is this relative too?
I haven't been able to find a good article that says something like, say, getting completely hammered once a week is worse/better for you then dropping rolls once a week.

Can anybody explain this?

Dropping rolls once a week is exponentially worse for you than getting hammered once a week.

MDMA isn't physically addictive like alcohol, but I would say it is MUCH more psychologically addictive than alcohol. There may be more potential for damage from alcohol due to the fact that it gets fairly regular use, as opposed to MDMA which should be used sparingly (as in no more than once a month, with 2-3 months being a much safer bet).

EDIT: If you were to use them equally, the MDMA will be much more damaging.

I don't think you can compare alc and MDMA on per usage basis. You're probably going to do more damage to yourself if you drop 2 times a week vs drinking 2 times a week. However, most people who drop don't do it that often. Personally, I find that MDMA stops being truly fun if I do it too regularly. Alc on the other hand is much easier to use everyday and to maintain this kind of addiction.

Then there is the issue of people being violent on alc, domestic abuse etc.

A UK parliamentary committee reported on the relative harm of a selection of commonly available drugs including alcohol and tobacco.
The report used various criteria to assess harm, not just personal harm but also harm to society, cost in health care and suchlike.
MDMA came out as one of the least harmful in the list, next to GHB and khat.
Alcohol came out pretty high. See the link for more information:

I truely wish this study was plastered on every newspaper.

On topic, I think that MDMA is probably safer than Alcohol. Basing it on the fact that a lot of people start fights when drinking, meaning harm to yourself/somebody else, and obviously MDMA doesn't have that problem.
MDMA also 'loses the magic' which would stop most people from using it (maybe a lot of harm would be done by that time, but at least it prevents further damage, unlike Alcohol).

Then again, the downregulation of 5-ht receptors etc. could be a lot more damaging than the effects of Alcohol...

I'm sure somebody smarter could correct me on the matter though lol.

Abuse of alcohol is easier to maintain. In this way I feel alc is more damaging. It's just more prevalent, accepted, and doesn't rely on slowly-replenishing serotonin.

Comparing MDMA with alcohol is kind of like comparing cake with steak- they're both enjoyable in incredibly different ways, and liking one does not mean you'll enjoy the other.

MDMA has the ability to be a very deep, emotional, and even character building experience for some- alcohol is not associated with being so meaningful or multi-facetted.

In terms of damage, they both have their draw backs. MDMA has the unique feature of depleting serotonin, and cause potential damage to those associated receptors. MDMA by it's nature requires that you take breaks from it (theories range from 4 weeks to 4 months) in order to enjoy it and not do damage. Alcohol has the ability to do damage to more organs and areas of the body, but it is not significantly depleting of a vital neuro chemical like MDMA is, so it lends itself to more frequent use without evident damage. Everyone responds differently- some people find drinking moderately once a week has them feeling like crap, and others drink almost nightly for years without feeling noticeable effects.

As far as harm on society, many studies have made a point to state that MDMA is far less harmful in terms of leading to risky or hazardous behavior than alcohol, and kills far fewer people than alcohol or smoking.

Again, it's really not something you can compare- they are extremely different in their effects on the body during and after their use. They may both be drugs, but they are extremely different in almost every other aspect imaginable.
