Ecstasy users unlikely to have worse health finds study

Hey guys,

This was on the Daily Telegraph website today 27/10/10.

YOUNG ecstasy users are unlikely to suffer worse health or behavioural problems than non-users of the party drug, a new study has found.
The Queensland Alcohol Drug and Education Centre (QADREC) study of 6051 young adults aged between 18 and 23 in Brisbane and the Gold Coast assessed the health of those who had taken the drug at least three times in 12 months, compared with those who had never taken it.

QADREC senior research officer Andrew Conroy said there was little difference in the mental health of the two groups when anxiety and depression levels were measured during telephone and face-to-face interviews.

"Essentially there's no differences in mental health between the two groups," Mr Conroy told AAP.

There was also no differences identified in levels of anti-social or aggressive behaviour.

Mr Conroy said ecstasy users tend to live independently from their families, are engaged in full-time jobs rather than full-time study, with higher levels of disposable income than non-users.

The study found there was little dependence on the drug, with 90.3 per cent of users taking the drug less than weekly.

Access to the drug was strongly linked to groups of friends.

"People usually go out to a venue or to some sort of event or party with their friends and people in the friendship network will buy a batch of ecstasy for everyone," he said.

"It's a very persuasive and easy set of circumstances to try the drug."

And while the effects of coming down from ecstasy can include short-term bouts of lethargy and depression in the days immediately following use, there did not appear to be persistent impacts, he added.

Severe reactions, including overdoses, appear to arise when the purity of the drug is mixed with other chemicals.

"The negative effects of people taking pills tend to be when there's something apart from MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) in the pills," Mr Conroy said.

"We asked people for the last occasion that they used ecstasy whether they thought it was real ecstasy and a third thought that it probably wasn't."

While the study did not look at the long-term effects of taking ecstasy there are plans to assess the group in early 2011.

After reading all the articles lately... "public to decide on drugs"....."alcohol price spike fuels switch to ecstacy"...theyre even trialling cannabis in Nimbin soon.

And after this one, it's like theyre slowly trying to inform the public that these things arent so bad (bout fooken time!:P )...So they can start regulating things like Cannabis/Ecstacy (these seem to be the main 2 focused on) and bring in tax's for them and Harm Reduction etc...

Can only keep our fingers crossed haha :D

Only a third thought it wasn't real MDMA? Sad.

I thought there was studies saying most users developed depression in their 30's after ecstasy use?

They are NOT trialling cannabis anywhere in this country anytime soon.

Get ready for harsher penalties. Myself thinks the Cannabis Caution Notice works fine..

No pun intended. ;-)

Yeah the heading on that thread is misleading, if you follow the links it is still only a proposal.

The only part of this study that really goes against it is the fact that 1/3 admitted they probably weren't taking MDMA so the their results put a massive question mark on the conclusion. Not to mention how many people of the other 2/3 that probably don't realize they're taking something completely different. Not saying MDMA is bad, just the study is a bit bodge.

Probably wouldn't see any drastic effects because 98% of people in this country haven't had MDMA in over a year.

Good to see articles like this popping up.

whats mdma?? never heard of that here in australia,
so sad... such a beautiful substance basically dead in australia, friends of mine that want to try mdma i tell them to fly over to the netherlands cause they aint getting it ere..
luckily i experienced the love.

They say they are going to trial the same group in 2011. This is prettymuch pointless because the majority of those users won't of used MDMA due to the drought and those which do use pills will most likely be piped or some other drug. I wonder how that will show up in their study?

But, it's still good to read about studies like this.

good to see another article about positive inpact mdma has. or lack of bad inpact i should say :)

and oh yeah sexy mistee. wheres the long nosed fellows at. :) bet u had wicked time on it :D

Well I'm 38 and no real signs of depression yet... I think :) but I was never a heavy user and would often go 3mths plus without

elephants yeah!! once in two years which is an import.... im talkin a steady flow of mdma yeow!!.

headah. for all those that dont kno, headahs my boyfriend!! my nose is probably just as long as yours for the long nosed fellows.

derail a little bit....but where does the scheduling of mdma in australia discount it from med research? i was under the impression it did not..

had to do a report in my second year of uni for a bull shit science unit, just a presentation on what a researcher was working on at my uni. someone in my group (awesome) found this lady who was doing studies on MDMA and its effects in treatment of autism....
all of it was all done with rats tho. anytime a human comes into the picture its a no-go right? at least its a good sign that (i'm assuming) medical grade MD is floating around monash....just thinking about alleviating the problems with this study

I went to buy a test kit today in the city but no one had any... Does anyone know where you can get them shop wise in Sydney?

^ Check out the reagent tester thread, http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=280157

Lets keep this on topic though ;)

It's good to hear these results though I'm a little surprised that there wasn't any reported increased anxiety or anything like that. Most heavy MDMA users I've known have reported at least some adverse mental health effects, though they don't seem to be permanent. I wonder if it's because most (all really.. :() pills are adulterated these days, people aren't using as frequently.

MDMA use for me has saved me from severe depression. I have never had it since that one magic day when I first took MDMA - I've never abused this drug unlike Alcohol, which I find a lot more addictive and damaging
