Just learned about these perplexing "insect hormones". If even 1/10 of their claimed benefits/effects are true, they could be the next game changer for athletes and fitness enthusiasts everywhere. There seems to be actual data and studies backing it up, but not many, so I'm unsure if this is just the next sensationalized snake oil, but it doesn't seem to be this way.

They have next to no side effects and have more positive effects on many things in the body like muscle growth, cortisol, cardiovascular health, immune system. However the production is incredibly tightly controlled because the plant it is extracted from (so much for insect hormones) is only grown in one isolated, small mountain region. Needless to say it's expensive (one site quoted $6000/kg, with doses showing benefits at about 10mg/kg)and fakes ruined many people's opinions.

To be clear this is not AAS or even remotely similar, though hey have some overlapping effects. These do not negatively effect the HPTA whatsoever and seem to also not have any androgenic effects. Some say effective doses start at 10mg/kg bodyweight. Yet rodents didn't show toxicity until 6400mg/kg. This has been tested on rodents, animals, insects, and humans

Apparently "turkesterone" is far, far superior to other ecdysteroids. So I guess I'm really just referring to the 10% extract of Ajuga Turkestanica

There really isn't enough research yet (especially on humans) to give us anything as conclusive as 'side effect free'. These things rarely are. If only because one theoretically desirable effect (say angiogenesis) will not be desirable for some.

We have discussed them before here. Though not containing turkesterone, just 50g quinoa will give you a moderate 20mg dose of a mix of ecdysterones. Have a read here.

If you want to swot up some more, head on over to Examine.com where the guys have done some reasonably thorough research on the subject.
