Easy to learn acoustic guitar tunes

I started on Nirvana myself. The first song I ever learned was Smells Like Teen Spirit. There are some essential black sabbath riffs (Iron Man, NIB, Sweet Leaf) that will help you get started as well. Then I really recommend learning a few chords. I put that part off for a while and ended up wishing I had learned them sooner.

There are tablature databases that show you how to play the songs. www.ultimate-guitar.com, www.guitaretab.com, http://www.azchords.com/ etc

Yeah I should probably add that I can play power chords and am looking to actually learn some real stuff now I've taken it back up again. Will get on the sabbath riffs with my current skills though.

Basically any song from American Beauty by the Grateful Dead. I teach guitar for a living atm, and i always teach songs from that album to clients who want to learn basic acoustic play-along type stuff.

Eh, I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer but if you want to play acoustic guitar then gently place the power chords in your toolbox for a while and you can return to them after you learn the essentials of acoustic guitar playing.

I thought it was common knowledge that all self-taught acoustic players first learn the major chords G, C, and D. Master those three chords and become comfortable moving between them......they comprise something like 80% of all modern rock songs. Eventually you will learn that G--C,D make up the I--IV,V intervals of a basic blues progression. But don't worry about that stuff yet.

You can go to those links that Bardeaux posted above and find TAB to most of the songs that have been mentioned in this thread. Look for some of the easier ones that have your three new chords. It can help if you have the CD or mp3 of the song so you can hear the strumming pattern and practice playing along with the music.

BTW my first song was the rhythm part to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here."

Has a couple of minor chords but once you learn the first three, the minor chords are cake.
