I've quite recently been converted to cous-cous. Never used to like the stuff but think it was mainly due to being fed it by wholefood freaks who made it in acutely wholefood freak style which didn't agree with me. It's also nasty when it goes mushy which is quite easy to do. It's really quite nice when made nicely though. Cous-cous FACT! which surprised me when I first heard it but probably isn't so surprising to people who actually eat the stuff: cous-cous is a form of pasta not a grain. I'd always thought it was some kinda grain and it still feels like it should be somehow.

Cous-cous aside, I had twice-delayed curry what's been on the back-burner - both figuratively and indeed literally - for the last two days. As you'd expect given it's stewlike status, the extra time proved to be a bit of a bonus. It was gonna be actual stew but switched it to curry on a whim cos not had curry for a while now. At least doesn't seem like I have despite the fact I surely have. Sausage and assorted root vegetable curry made with dollops from three different varieties of Patak's spice paste specifically.
 
yeah it does appear to be more of a grain type thing, a bit more like rice, rather than pasta type stuff, i guess it is a bit of a cross between the 2. I had only really previously used it on camping trips cos it was very convenient and lightweight to carry, and you just had to heat up some water on a camping stove add to dish of cosucous to soak, whilst then heating tin of rat or rav in the meantime. But it can be made a fuck of a lot nicer by adding olive oil or butter, salt, pepper, onions and garlic, fresh basil, tomato puré, parmesan, generally not really the sort of poncey fairly elaborate things you tend to take with you when you go camping though. 8(

That really doesn't make much sense if you think about it. Pasta is made from grain and cous-cous is pasta so I suppose you could call it processed grain at a stretch. I like your abbreviations though. Ratatouille has never been a huge favourite of mine but now it's been dubbed 'tinned rat' I feel far more justified in avoiding it.

Rat food aside, had Ben & Jerry's strawberry shortcake frozen yoghurt for pud. On offer at the moment obviously. Was slightly disappointed. Have had frozen yoghurts before that were excellent but this one was kinda bland. The best bit was actually the lil shortcake chunks which is surely a bad sign. Definitely not worth a fiver a tub. Not even close. I think if you're going to eat Ben & Jerry's you may as well go for one that's stupidly indulgent - it's not like the frozen yoghurt versions are exactly health food given it's Greek yoghurt with added cream. T'other one I had recently was really tasty but can't recall what it was. Remember thinking it was at least as good as the ice cream equivalent but it had more "stuff" involved which probably helps.
 
Cold ham & mushroom pizza from last night, I can't remember getting home or getting it so its win win :)
 
Vile and dried sponge consistency protein bar...water with every torturous nibble..something gotta go in though uhhh.
 
Newsflash!

I'm not currently eating them but had to post anyway...

I've just been for my daily food shop & found these in my local Co-Op:



^ Both are shaped Venison & Pork. (Meatballs - 56% Venison, 15% Pork; Grillsteaks - 56% Venison, 24% Pork)

The great part is, they cost a whopping £2.69 each. There were also Venison Sausages at the same price. The 'Grillsteak' is really a fancy name for a steak shaped burger considering it is not an actual steak. They look like a good brand (Highland Game) - Waitrose stock them, so I think that says it all. At that sort of price, it's certainly worth following up.

I won't be having them tonight if my Kratom arrives, but probably tomorrow. I'll let you know how they taste as soon as I know. :)

The end result of the above 'Grillsteak':



^^ Venison Grillsteak, Sautéed Sweet Potatoes with Thyme, Grilled Tomatoes with Olive Oil & Basil and Asparagus.

Felt like going all out for tonight's meal. Some, almost, proper posh nosh... if it wasn't for the glorified venison burger =D (they do all sort of tricks to make it look like a steak in the picture on the packet, but I was under no illusions really...)

Still, it tastes really good...up to par with the ones we get from these upmarket burger vans. Well worth the price. Meatballs should be good too.

With the other grillsteak, I'm going to have a Venison Burger, do some fried onions & find decent bun for it. Have a go at some hand cut chips too.

They sell venison burgers and steaks at Co-Op here. Pricier than what you paid - especially the steaks (perhaps unsurprisingly). Burgers are pretty reasonable though and are probably the best burgers I've ever tasted. Like really good quality beefburger only beefier with a hint of gaminess. That's game-like not gammy as in leg. Very tasty. Fancy trying the steak some time but it's a little dear...

Dins tonight consisted of pizza cos am a bit fed up with the curry I've been eating all week. Chicago Town 'Pepperoni Pile-Up' - less of a carcrash than it sounds. Actually rather good pepperoni compared to what you usually get on frozen pizza. It's apparently a limited edition but only difference between it and that standard pepperoni is... answers onna postcard.

Got ice cream lolly things for potential pud. Cadbury's 'Nuts About Caramel' - cos they were cheap and do look rather tasty. Sunshine and warmth brings out all the ice-cream offers. Goody-good. Mind you, wintertime brings out all the ice-cream offers too :sus:
 
Nothing beats a good Venison Burger Shammy... every Christmas we have amazing Venison Burgers courtesy of 'Tomintoul Venison' who set up at the forest where we get our tree.

Hmm, I see some icy conspiracy going on here! Although, many foods seem to be constantly on offer, I fear the conspiracy is merely that they are trying to sell them. Shocker considering they are a shop, or is something else really going on, is the shop a cover... :sus:

Well yes they would want to sell their wares. But why constantly on offer? There are some things which I don't recall ever not being on offer which kinda defeats the object of an offer. Bit like those furniture and carpet and kitchen and bed and bathroom places where stuff just seems to be on permaoffer. Actually saw a programme about it once and they know it's kinda pointless but because all their competition does the same thing everybody has to have permaoffers or they appear to be more expensive. They just make the offer price what they would normally sell it for and stick a 33% OFF!!! sticker on it or whatever. I presume similar goes on with some supermarket grocery offers.
 
I think the OFT has fairly strict rules regarding the likes of sales in Supermarkets. I remember the case of the new type of Strawberries where a supermarket was fined because they had put them on sale immediately on receiving stock... have to sell them for <x> many days before you can put a new item on sale. I might have read that on BL.

I've no idea how long they are allowed to keep items on sale & how soon they can put them back on sale again. I notice my local Co-Op had Innocent Smoothies at £2 each, then £1.87 & now £5 for 2. I suspect the changing offers are a loophole around not being allowed to have them on the same offer continuously.

They sell Ice Cream cheap in the Winter simply because it doesn't sell particularly well... in the Summer they put it on offer to entice you come to them instead of a competing supermarket. Those are the two main reasons for sales I believe.
 
Rules on sales were explained in proggy I mentioned but don't recall all the details. I do recall there are ways around them though (much as you'd expect really). Things do have to be on sale at the listed price for a certain period but I think there was a get-out clause in that they didn't necessarily have to be on sale in that particular branch for that period so there could be one shop selling at the stated price then the rest sell at sale price. Was summat like that that meant those DFS-type shops could essentially have permasales and presume supermarkets have similar tricks.

Most new items I see on sale at supermarkets start off on sale as introductory offers. Maybe there's some technical difference between a sale item and an introductory offer and a special offer and a BOGOF and so on. I'd imagine so or Co-Op here would've been fined out of existence years back. As would all the other supermarkets. Sainsbury's must've made quite a spectacular cock-up of it to be fined for a sale I'd imagine.
 
As far as I know, stuff has to be available at the full price for something like 28 days before they can advertise it as reduced or on sale (to stop shops making up a full price so you think it's an uber bargain). Not sure there are any rules about how long it can be on sale for beyond that, but it's been a few years since I worked in retail now that's for sure!
 
Spag bol. Made with lamb mince and with a nob or two attached. Not to the lamb. Not at mincing stage anyway. I hope.

Was asked to expand upon my new (to me) "flavour enhancement" technique so shall do so. Fried onions really gently for ages adding bacon, some rather pricey mini sweet red peppers, green and red pickled Jalapenos and garlic then added mince and let that fry slowly for a goodly while. Next added assorted spices and (sadly in this case dried - although would be too soon to add if otherwise) herbs along with a squirt of tomato purée and let that fry down gently for even longer. The tomato purée should just catch on the pan as the sugars caramelise. The herbs and spices like it too. Don't burn any of it. Next added a good slosh of a decent red wine and a tin of chopped tomatoes (which also happened to have added herbs) and left to simmer for a bit til thickened to suitable degree.

Was the next bit I fukked up. Cooked linguini (cos pack was open and is spaghetti by another name - as if pasta form makes that much difference) and added spoonfuls of sauce and stirred in. Then left it to settle on the backburner whilst garlic bread toasted. Downfall being switching off the wrong burner hence singing the whole lot. Still tasted great but will taste better day after tomorrow (Easter dins at parents tomorrow itself) cos still got most of the sauce in a separate pan.

Thus endeth the lesson.
