In what ?, it's been a good while since I went up there but the path by the railway line would be fairly easy from what I remember. The one on the other side, the rangers path ?? was much more tricky. I'd need motorised transport to get up there these days:)

twas a 4WD landrover/offroader thingy. He got stuck, and had to be rescued both times. :|

@Raas i dont wish to start a war with you man, but im sure i heard on Countryfile or something that since Ennerdale is so remote (10 miles or so from the nearest road) that people wouldnt be able to make the trek there and back before nightfall, and actually have the time to to enjoy it and rest up occassionally to boot. I have deep respect the countryside but a few pent peg holes, slighlty yellowed grass, and spreading the remaining embers of the fire causes minimal if any impact. IMO.

I'd take a telling off if it did come to that, it would be worth it.

Hey, I'm not having a go! Just letting you know wild camping is prohibited, though a few people do it anyway. Bit of a shame, but considering theres a lot of cheap quality camp sites at the foot of the mountains, perhaps not worth the risk.

Don't know about Ennerdale though. Not visited that part of the lakes.

The shame, Raas, is that wild camping isn't allowed anywhere in England (or Wales). In Scotland you have a right to. Within obvious sensible constraints.

^

To be fair - I've camped wild in England and Wales plenty times with no hassle whatsoever. Just have to be stealthy setting up the camp and ideally on elevated ground and you should be left alone.

its ok, things can come across as not intended.

Not many people do visit Ennerdale as you have to tramp ten miles up and down roadless mountains and valleys to get there. Its huge appeal to me is its remotenes. I can pretend to be Bear Grylls for a day. And not leave a trace i was ever there. (apart from the grass turning yellow)

ive got the julia bradbury ennerdale epiiosode of wainwrights walks on dvd. Ill watch it it again and refresh my facts.

:X

thanks for spoiling my already soured mood. :p Narh fuck em. I respect the countryside as much as them. There arent enough rebelious people in the UK. That should be our RIGHT to camp on common land. If i find a great spot im having it for a night, telling off, fine, whatever. Too many rules.

If you ask a farmers permission to camp on a particularly picturesque part of his and and offer him a tenner or so he'd snap your hand off. Not sure if that is wild camping in its true sense though....

I've camped wild in Scotland many times, it's great! I used to tramp the Moorfoots, the Pentlands and the Lammermuirs with my Dad, with no regard to fences or walls, and I'll always remember him telling me that if we did the same in England we could expect some farmer with a gun to scare us off.

But is there not some fun to be had in the breaking of rules and cocking a snook at the owners of "private" land in England, camp on their property and fuck them!

i get what you mean. Some farmers are fuckin rough characters though, wouldnt be beyond some of them to poke a shotgun in your flaps. So to speak.

There must be thousands of beautiful wild camping spots where youd never be discovered/

When I first moved here I thought it'd be great for walking. Looks like it should be. Isn't though. Farmers really will chase you off with a shotgun. Proper miserable bastards so they are. Was easier to find nice walks when I lived in civilisation.

Welsh footpaths are famous for it Shambles, had the same experience here. I've met barbed wire fences. Dogs. And one particular nice chappy farmer bastard once sprayed slurry three feet deep for fifty yards the other side of a stile on 'his' land.

The other alternative with Welsh footpaths is their amazing ability to run out in the middle of nowhere.

Get off my land.

Tell me about it, SHM. Never come across such miserable bastards in my life. Occasional Mrs Shambles lives up a mountain and is surrounded by farmers so often cross paths with 'em if I walk up there. Such ignorant fucks it's untrue :\

There are designated walks dotted around for the tourists but if all you want to do is just go for a wee wander in the immediate vicinity you've got no chance. Having to drive somewhere in order to walk is kinda silly if you're not a tourist.

Same rules apply, Brimz. Bring drugs and/or nice things beginning with the letter "B". Like, for example, Blueberry & Banana cake =D

Arf! =D When I was a member of our local chapter of Billy Bikers, the 'Mental Head Motorcycle Club (MHMC) - of which there were a healthy 3 members in total (all on 70's Honda CB550 4s with big bars), our motto was 'Bikes, Broads, Beer, Billy 'n' Blow', though now I'd be inclined to add 'Brown', but it doesn't roll off the tongue so easily.

Does that mean I qualify?

It is. Was it August we decided on? Meh. I'm always here so makes no odds to me :D

I haz no castle though. I have a shithole of a flat. It ain't exactly good for meets (Knock will confirm this :D). I do have some rather stunning scenery within close proximity to me in every direction though. Snowdonia sounds like a winner. As long as somebody gives me a lift there and back anyway :D

^ It's happening Shammy, party in your flat.

We just have to wait for the tourists to piss off.

Meh. We don't get too many tourists here really. I'd avoid market day though. Actually that makes nary a jot of difference cos is still hardly rammed. There is only one real road in the place I live and I don't live on it - I live in the world's smallest estate next to it where no tourist would have any interest in going.

Party at my place wouldn't bother me in the slightest :D

Would bother the folk who came to it though =D

where is the meet up? im near lake district, would be good to meet some of you guys :)
