Does anyone else give their plants a bit of encouragement or a freindly word every now n then .
Some peeps rekon it works , i'ma tad sceptical but i've done far stupider stuff so i might have a chat with the guysn gals latter:)

I chat to my plants a lot, apologise when I've forgotten to water then and encourage then to grow a bit more :D

Nothing wrong with it I say, they're alive and they might respond to it, haha, cheers me up if nothing else!

I had a very one way conversation with my fellas this morning , i hope they respond in kind;)

My plants have really took off, I wasn't expecting it so fast. Its addictive stuff, I'm gonna extend the patch by a few more feet to fit some more stuff in.

I am trying 4 the very first time to grow Papver Somniferum , I have them in peat pots by the window catching the sunlight hopefully as i'm starting from seed they will start to show signs of shooting up a bit b4 the weather gets proper and then be able to put them outside ,I would be very grateful for any advice,on what to do ,the best way any thing that may increase my chances of success.
Thanks in advance

anyone successfully grown an avocado from the seed of one you have eaten. so far it is the only one I have been unable to grow and it is starting to annoy me. any advice or tips would be great :D

I think there are a high number of duds in the fruit but they are slow sprouters and growers, of that there can be no doubt.

A lot of sites and books recommend piercing the stone with cocktail sticks and suspending so that the broader end is in water. I personally have not had any luck with this method after three or four attempts- they just went brown and rank.

What worked for me last time was planting the stone in a pot of compost so about 1/3 of it was above the surface, watering well and placing the whole in a clear plastic bag (with the top loosely open) somewhere fairly warm. It was checked once a week and if dry watered.

Very, very slowly (this was winter which probably made matters worse) a shoot started to emerge. I wasn't sure if it was a root or a shoot and dug up and reburied it a few times in different orientations which can't have helped.

When left properly alone for about a month the shoot poked its head above the surface and fairly rapidly (for an avocado anyway) grew proper leaves and is now about six inches high with three sets of big waxy leaves.

Maybe you should get three or four stones on the go in pots and see if any of them work out? I think the shoot will emerge much faster at this time of year than in winter when I started mine off. They seem to like being left well alone for about 99% of the time so avoid overwatering and resist the temptation to go poking around in the compost.

Just about to plant up my sprouted potatoes, pretty excited! My parents are coming to visit me this weekend bearing gifts of compost, pots, 3 tomato plants, basil, coriander, oregano, mint and parsley. Woohoo! My outdoor christmas tree is coming along well too, didn't think it'd like the sun this much :)

ollieideal, somniferum are best off just grown in situ, ie, in the place you will be growing them to maturity, they are INCREDIBLY easy to grow, don't need much in the way of ferts, don't mind dry hot weather, just give them as much sunlight, direct sunlight, as possible....and save seeds from the biggest pods for next year....although it's likely they'l self seed all over the place while you're waiting for the pods to reach that Del Monte moment.

I have. I soaked the seed until it split then put it into soil.

Here, I looked up a link that can explain it better than me. I don't remember putting tooth picks in it but hey, maybe I just got lucky, Or maybe I did. It was 9 years ago or something.

Wiki How - Avacado tree

It died when I left it with someone to look after when I went away for 4 months.

They take 10 years to fruit though. Think I'm going to grow another one. I still have chillies I bought with Shammy to plant. They're just sat there in their packet on the soil in it's little green pale. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. I hear they need plenty of sunshine which would be perfect for my front window.

I'm going to name my plants I think :) newest additions are three tiny chilli plants, will let the Mr name those as they are his.

Congratulations on Bob! :D

will do brimz mine go out during the day n come in at night

was out cheddar way the day n passed a wicked garden centre n bought a horizontal bed n some more seeds i got some black papavers n they look smart as fuk ,
i'ma do them outside all the way south facing . starting the morra .

yep, they don't like being transplanted, the roots are tiny, really fine, and will all grow into each other. So when you plant them out you may be better off planting clumps as separating each one will be difficult and probably kill them. Direct into the soil is the way to grow poppies.

Lets see some pics people, it'll be good to compare in a few months time.

I've done shit all, too much other stuff to deal with. I've only planted onions that I haven't even watered cos the dog chewed the hose. And my 9 baby chillies are coming along nicely, keeping my evicted northern lights mother company in one of those mini plastic greenhouses on the patio. I need to kill her, just can't bring myself to do it :(

I talk to my all the time :D I am growing runner beans, chillies and melon. I sometimes show my chilli plants my mums ones and tell them not to let the side down, they need to get bigger and better than hers.

If that fails, I am just gunna leave the weed killer next to them for a couple weeks see if they get the message!
