EADD Gardening Club: Ploughing FUBAR's infertile Fields

How much attention does valerian demand Mr Bulbous? And is the smell noticeable when outside? I'd rather like to grow some as it gives me wicked dreams and have been given carte blanche to fill in the gaps in the garden, but although the smell doesn't bother me I can see it bothering others.

Well I managed to grow it, so you can pretty much assume minimal attention! (needs to be kept fairly moist if I recall - doesn't like it too dry. I grew mine in a shrub tub) Doesn't get that delightful 3 week old sweaty sock smell until it's cut and exposed to the atmosphere

Ah nice, didn't know there was a programme though I have seen a book I assume is in someway associated? Good stuff shall give that a watch when I get home :)

Oh, so there's a book of the series out already, is there?

Have to say that we've found the 'episodes' so far very interesting and are aiming to try out some of the 'recipes' :)

Yeah, Amazon has been pimping it quite a bit recently. Was considering buying it for me and my Mum. Might spend today catching up if there's any more on iPlayer :D

Funnily enough, I've Valerian on my plant/seed shopping list, due to the 'Grow Your Own Drugs' programme on BBC2 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j4j41

Check it out :)

When I saw that series being previewed on some BBC programe, I had to look twice because of the title. They seem to have steered clear of saying/doing anything controversial though (although how to make cough medicine from opium poppies would have benn interesting & a good laugh!)

Doubt you were the only one!

Some of the camera work's rather trippy, from time to time :D

You seen it, F&B?

And how's your garden of delights coming on? :)

this is what i am working with, can only see a small part of garden in this pic

its going to take a lot of work, im going to chop down the trees, sew new grass (once the weeds are gone)

also going to plant new bits and bobs..

also going to make wooden decking for the patio (not visible in this pic) and going to have the wooden decking all the way around the side of the house.. its a good place for a garden because the trees block any wind and when the sun shines it always feels much warmer than anywhere else

its not the biggest garden by any stretch of the imagination but thats what happens when you are surrounded by 1000s of houses.. it is private and quiet around though so it will be cool for BBQs and chilling in the summer months i hope

Size isn't everything ;)

Nice having the hedge and trees to prevent you from being overlooked.

Look forward to seeing some 'in progress' and 'after' shots, RA :D

sprayed my whole garden with roundup yesterday so it should kill all the weeds in a few weeks

:( Don't use round-up man, I know it's an easy and quick method to get rid of weeds, but you just support the fuckers (monsanto).

Proper garden weather it is :D Spent a good hour or so yesterday removing all the stones and weeds from the lawn. Surprisingly less tedious than you'd imagine. Don't know what we've got planned next though I'm intending to get all my stuff planted this week.

Planting up hanging baskets and some 'potatos in bags' after my morning's meditation, which I'm just away to :)

sorry, too late! :(

i had to spray again after 2 weeks as it wasnt making the weeds go away really, its looking alot better now.. theyre all dieing and brown

next step is to hire a rotavator and let loose

^ RA !!!!

Glyphosate takes several weeks to kill the plants - I'd suggest they died of the original dose you gave em - unless you applied a different class of herbicide this time.

I thought they had spades in ireland - rotovators are for rich lazy Americans

I wanna get out the back again, its always so satisfying when finish sprucing up your garden and just decide to call your mates up for cider and bbq.

after two weeks or two and a half weeks i was out the back figured that i didnt apply enough glyphosate on my original spray so i went and sprayed them again with a healthier covering, finished the bottle of round up and now they are going brown and withering much faster, previously there was only tiny brown specs on the green leaf bits of the weeds

i am going to clear up all the fallen rotten apples from the apple trees my dad planed years ago and either dig or rotavate - depending on how tough the earth is and whether there are still roots preventing me from turning the soil, as was the case when i tired with a fork a few weeks back!

Great weather today as well. Just done spitting some more earth over, sifted out all the "Aegopodium podagraria", I dunno what you guys like to call it in english. Such an invasive little fucker, it's taken over the whole garden, I'll never get rid of it completely.. It's a great substitute for spinach though, apparently. :D

Cleared loads of shit out of the garden but now it looks bare in some parts. I found a trellis at the back that's all shaded and I'm not sure what to grow up it now.
The apple tree looks nice though, the flower buds are all pink but I know they end up white. mm apples.
