EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

if you got amazon prime 'the man in the high castle' (book by PKD) is a pretty good series (alternative future where the Nazi's and the japs win the war) - also watched 'the man who wasn't there' the coen brothers take on a film noir - made in 2000 or so - I thought it was brilliant, with the most excellent billy bob thorton smoking a chesterfield when ever he in shot- which is most of the film.

I liked Man in the High Castle but i thought it dragged a little bit without developing that much by episode 10, though i'm looking forward to the next one (how bloody long will that be?) - i find most american series' annoying in how they meander and never actually conclude (i guess cos they want more series) - i like to have the sense that the whole story was written at the start (even if it wasn't); without giving spoilers of the book, i'd have thought it couldn't really be that open ended without diverging quite a lot.

Watched Attack on Titan last week, I quite liked it, there's a couple of very yummie Japanese lassies I much liked.

Of old films I rewatched Stargate, Reservoir Dogs and The Super Mario Bros film last week, the latter I consider so trashy that is actually a masterpiece.

I was dragged along to see 'The Dressmaker' last night, I hadn't read much about it so was imagining the worst, was actually planning on just falling asleep. However, I was pleasantly surprised and was howling with laughter in some scenes.

Judy Davis 10/10 - fucking hysterical.

Had to watch billy elliot with the wife once and actually i found it a very good film

Yeah man, we have to let 'them' pick at least once in awhile, you know? Always a bonus when it turns out to be alright, usually once in blue moon. I've watched some guff and had some really traumatic cinematic experiences in my time just to keep the peace. Can't be an arrogant asshole all of the time though, got to keep up appearances.

I cried all the way through Forrest Gump while in the midst of a horrific comedown off ecstasy when I was 18.

The bit when Jenny snuffs it, and he's by himself in the house - I was a mess, thank Christ I was alone, my street cred would have taken a terrible nose dive at the time.

Think I also joined a charity that night after seeing an advert.

I rewatched that threads the other day - it was just on vimeo (here it is). I found that one of the most chilling films i've seen - maybe it's cos i was brought up in the 80s (lots of nostalgia and 'ooh isn't that that one off of that thing?'), maybe it's because unlike the usual horror films this actually was/is quite likely.

Watched 'Pacific Rim' on Saturday night that i had recorded off of a Sky Movie channel with the old man. Mindless, action filled fun - giant monsters fighting giant robots in the ocean mainly.

I like science fiction, but the first half I was letting the million and one plot holes and weak dialogue dilute any enjoyment, then I just gave into the nonsense and started to have a good time switching off and watching such guff. Ron Perlman is hilarious in it plus there was a few excellent comedy moments in some scenes. Fight scenes were a spectacle as I would expect from a blockbuster film.

6/10

Now that is a name from the past - I've just checked and it is available from the usual download sites where you can download and view prior to buying.

'Threads' is on YouTube - I watched it again the other week. A very, very chilling film and I find it hard to believe I grew up in a world where there was a distinct possibility of getting the '4 minute warning'. We actually had classes at school telling us what to do in the event of a nuclear attack - even the class gobshites were totally silent throughout..

Went to see 'Black Mass' last night at the flicks. I would wholeheartedly say that I believe this to be one of the best performances by Johnny Depp in years, playing the notorious Boston crime lord James 'Whitey' Bulger.

The film itself isn't a complete triumph by any stretch of the imagination, although Depp's somewhat frightening performance was enough to keep me fixated throughout.

7/10
