Stimulants dysphoria ON amphetamine?

Hello,

Have recently been prescribed dexedrine for ADHD at which dosages are still being played around with. Initally, a 5mg dose alleviated my symptoms, gave me a sense of focus and mental clarity and I also noticed the subtle well-being increase however no euphoria - I am not chasing this, rather using it as I have been prescribed to alleiviate symptoms of ADHD. A few hours later it worse off and I dosed another 7.5mg orally and this brought about euphoria. Two days later the exact same scenario occured. Both times I experienced typical side effects increased heart rate, jaw clenching etc

The followed day I dosed 5mg every hour and felt nothing, no sense of focus and realised after so long I had been extremely slowed down, the typical ADHD reaction to it. I felt however DYSPHORIC. Same thing the next day however it was 10mg. and again felt dysphoric.

My question is, why has it suddenly gone from euphoric and allevitaing my symptoms, to the next day dysphoric and hence while I can focus and it alleviates symptoms somewhat it is coutnerproducutive. Essentially I am after what I have bene prescribed for and that is to alleviate my ADHD symptoms.

Is it common to feel dysphoric will on amphetamine?

Cheers

I've never known this to happen to anyone. I've also never felt anything too pronounced off such a small dose. YMMV.

It sometimes happens if the dose is too high. Try halving it and see if that helps. You might need to let your body become accustomed to your dose.

This happens to me sometimes on stimulants. Make sure you're eating enough during the day, even if you really have no appetite. Also make sure to drink plenty of water, as amphetamines really dry you out. I think your body just needs to get used to the new medication

Thought of another thing; you might want to switch to an extended release if you find you're dosing every couple of hours. If you're not using it as a recreational drug, you need to find a point where you don't feel it much at all. It should just be kind of in the background helping you focus, not an intense drive.

Give it a chance for a bit, and if it still doesn't feel good ask your doctor about switching to vyvanse. It's a pretty smooth stimulate and doesn't cause as many ups and downs throughout the day

I would make sure you're eating, sleeping, and exercising. Take chelated magnesium supplements, etc. There's a lot of good info in the Amphetamine Tolerance Megathread, located in the Advanced Drug Discussion I believe (correct me if I'm wrong). By the sounds of your jaw clenching, etc., you may have depleted some key neurotransmitters that typically produce the euphoric effects of amphetamines. Try the eating/sleeping/exercise/supplements thing while taking a break, then try your low dose again. If that doesn't help at least somewhat, I'm not sure what to tell you. Those magic first few doses might be the only ones that give you that euphoria without a break.

tricomb can you elaborate?

It sounds like your psyche is particularly sensitive to the subjective effects of amphetamine - psychosis could develop quickly if you abuse your medication (which you did by taking more than you were prescribed).

Didnt abuse my prescribed dose I can go higher actually and am playing around with the dosages. Took a break yesterday and so far 20mg has bought along effects let alone sides effects, maybe a slight increase in heart rate thats about it.

Finding this quite unusal how 5-10mg one day can bring about euphoria and such side effects yet the same dose or a bit more now does nothing.

Might have to look into amphetamine neurotoxicity and tolerance reduction threads!

Yes. I know the second part of your post is directed at the OP but I am also particularly sensitive to dl-amphetamine, which is why it's such a dysphoric experience for me. my Peripheral Nervous System jacked up with my Central Nervous System, that just really proved to be a distraction in the form of side effects. It got in the way of it being an effective ADHD medication, and was overall uncomfortable. Just my subjective reaction though. I would highly recommend never taking more than you're prescribed, and even that rule isn't perfect because some doctors prescribe really high doses of these medications.

Chelated Magnesium definitely helps smooth out the rough edges. Checkout this thread on preventing tolerance and neurotoxicity: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/threads/...oxicity-and-Tolerance-Reduction-Prevention-II

^Not to derail this thread, but I am surprised this community still calls this behaviour abuse, and not recreational use. The word abuse implies the misuse of the substance, and seeing as how recreation (within moderation) is an accepted use of amphetamines here, it strikes me as strange.

Gave it another shot today worked perfectly for my ADHD no euphoria or dysphoria just a smooth clear headed focus however it doesn't provide physical energy at due to it being the d-isomer only. Would say that dysphoric experience that it happened due to my state of mind aswell as lack of food and sleep in the days leading up to the particular use that caused the dysphoric experience.

I do take chelated magnesium aswell to help reduce tolerance but also counter side effects such as the jaw movement, muscle tightness/spasms which helps me relax at night aswell due to being less tense - strongly reccomend anyone who doesnt a shower and a massage even a spa and some stretching can help relieve muscle tension caused by amphetamine.

Anyway, the mood that comes along with it I find I dont really enjoy it in that it feels like its a flat, monotone emotional ride, no real downs or ups - is this common on amp, does anyone else experience it and can it be countered with anything, possibly tryptophan?

Cheers!

Nobody mentioned this aspect but that sounds like tolerance, at least how it manifests for me.

With my chosen amp type, if i take again to soon, 2 days after the last binge, i get much more peripheral stimulation and a weird sense of anxiety and disphoria thats very uncomfortable and obvious. In fact dosing more makes it worse and the only way to resolve is to take the edge off with alcohol (in my case!).

It can happen indeed, when you take dexedrine or adderall too often it will happen where you'll feel like you'd rather be sober. That's what all the kids who don't need ritalin talk about real soon into treatment. Take care.

Stimulants always have the potential to cause dysphoria, because too much epinephrine is not a good thing. I think this is why speedballs are so popular, the depressant cancels out the negative effects of the stim.
