Allright, this won't be a typical trip report (at least for me) because I'm in a rush and because this was something of a "trial" trip.
This report will focus on the synergy between the two drugs. Therefore I will not attempt to fully describe the individual effects of DXM or mushrooms. Nor will I really mention what I was doing that night, because I don't think it really mattered or was very interesting at all.
My motive for doing this? 1) Curiousity; 2) This is what I had available on a friday night.
Notes on my particular tolerance to these drugs:
DXM -- 375mg gets me into 3rd platuea, OBE space.
Mushrooms -- 2.5 grams of good mush is a strong trip for me.
Times and doses:
T+0:00 -- took 150mg DXM (dissolved sucrets)
T+0:45 -- took 1 gram of potent dried cubensis mushrooms
I started feeling the mushrooms first, at about T+1:15 I could recognize the tryptamine buzz.
By T+2:00h I was getting some mild visuals. It was a true combination of DXM and mushrooms. The DXM caused a shift in perception and general "distortion" and the mushrooms caused things to breathe, enhanced colors, and sharpened the precision of my vision markedly (this always happens on shrooms... they give me amazing vision beyond my already good 20/10 vision.)
Soon after this the visuals got more intense (but never very intense). The DXM seemed to cause the entire room to shift and objects to slide about a little.
Around this time the buzz pretty much sucked. But then again, I never enjoy the DXM buzz until three hours after dosing. I felt very "weird"... kind of out of it and spacey. The only way I could even tell that I had eaten shrooms was because of the visuals.
Around this time I talked to nickthecheese on instant messenger and told him what I was up to. This was probably the first point I decided that this combo basically sucked, because the visuals were uninteresting and the buzz mostly sucked. It was probably apparent to Nick that I was in a strange mood when he was talking to me.
Another note: This combination made me very anti-social. Shrooms make me very introspective to begin with, and DXM makes me act unpredictably and strange around other people, so I decided to spend most of the time in my room, playing guitar, and on the computer.
Both DXM and mushrooms normally enhace my musical perception and guitarin' skills, but this combo put me in a weird headspace such that I quickly became disinterested in playing my instrument.
I smoked herb a few times throughout the "trip". It was nice, but didn't launch me into a strong trip.
However, I should note that this combo seems to potentiate both of the drugs. I seemed affected by the mushrooms and DXM (independently) more strongly than I would have been had I taken them alone. I also feel like, even though there was synergy, that I could indentify accurately which affects were attributed to each drug.
This is when things become interesting:
At about T+4:00h I smoked a bowl and started feeling more dissociated. This is the time when DXM normally peaks for me. I consider T+3:00h to T+5:30 to be "prime DXM time" because the dissociation is greatest (as opposed to just feeling drunk and having strange perception) and the psychedelic aspects are strongest. Also, I enjoy the comedown buzz much more than the comeup buzz.
So a little while after this I decided to lay down in bed, turn off the lights, and put on some Brian Eno's "Music for Airports". It turns out this was a great idea, as my room turned into something really beautiful.
The DXM provided the canvas: The room was malleable, like a drippy oil painting. Light that snuck in through the windows was perceived differently. Perception was also altered so that angles seemed strange, objects seemed closer or further than they were in reality, and the contrast between the shadows in the room caused the nature of the room to look very different and strange.
The mushrooms provided the paintbrush: Because the room was so malleable from the DXM, the mushrooms were able to work their creativity with amazing efficiency. Complex and organic stencil drawings cut through the odd DXM canvas and came to life before my eyes... of flowers blooming and other patterns which appeared to grow and bloom.
During this period I experienced moderate euphoria... or maybe it was just extreme contentedness. Either way, I felt like this unique visual display made up for the lame beginning and middle of the trip.
I fell asleep fairly easily after that. I had a headache, but I attribute this to the saccharin or whatever crappy sweeteners are in the Sucrets.
...
Will I try this again? Yes.
Here's how I would do it differently. I would take *more* DXM and the same amount of shrooms.
I would take 350mg of DXM, and wait two hours before I eat mushrooms.
Then the shrooms would just be kicking in by the time the DXM is enjoyable. Low doses of DXM also tend to be less enjoyable to me.
I would expect this plan to result in an intense trip.
