DXM - 5 years later. Physical nausea just thinking about it?

I've heard of this YEARS ago happening to someone on Dextroverse, but basically if I even start visualizing the box of DXM in my head, it literally kicks up my gag reflex. As I'm typing this, it's giving me that weird pushing feeling in my throat right before you're gonna throw up.
Strangely enough, I used to like how it tastes when I used to do it nearly daily. Now the taste of it is enough to make me gag alone.

I have this slightly irrational fear of heading down the medicine aisle in pharmacies/drug stores because if I catch a glimpse of the particular brand of DXM I took, I might vomit.

I used to do DXM more or less daily years ago with a group of 4 other friends. At least 2 of them are experiencing the same "symptom" as I am when thinking of it. Has anyone encountered anything like this before with DXM?

it's a fairly common reaction. I get physically nauseous whenever I see, or even think about those damned little sugary red coricidin pills, or even regular robo-max..... and it's been over 15yrs since I touched those.
It seems to me, to happen more often amongst DXM users who experience nausea/vomiting during higher trip plateaus, and especially those of us that happened to use DXM pills with the antihistamine (CPM) in them.
I know there's folks here that probably know more about actually why/how it happens, but the Psychedelic Drugs Forum might be a better place to ask.

I have a friend who throws it up every time, before the DXM an be absorbed. The body's just decided it doesn't like it. And with that flavour? Can't say I blame him.

I think it's just the same as with everything else the body notes as bad.
I wasn't able to eat spaghetti bolognese for 4 years because I threw up one time from it.
Think about some alcoholic drink you once got fucked up on beyond boundaries.
Sangria makes me get goose bumps just thinking about the colour of the vomit it produces

So your big problem is that cough medicine makes you think about vomiting? Perspective...

As for those of us who are still using dxm once in a blue moon, to get around the nausea, either buy dxm powder or use the form of store brand cough medicine that comes in pill form... problem solved.

This sounds like conditioned taste aversion. As Xayo mentioned, the body figures out that something, usually with a very distinctive taste, makes it sick. Since getting sick takes a lot of energy from other functions, it avoids it by generating a nausea response. The more distinctive the taste (or image, or other stimulus), the stronger the aversion-- usually.

Incidentally, this is one of the reasons why many people won't touch tequila. They overdid it, usually on the cheap stuff, and got so sick that a very strong association winds up being formed.

Sadly I was a rather impulsive person for the past 2 years. I had my first bottle in my car after buying it at a supermarket. I get 10 minutes from my house and start puking on the side of road wishing I had died. I had had Ketamine at a friends a long while back and if this felt even the slightest like that I was going to get that "feeling". Anyway 6 months later I still was nauseated from the syrup, I still get sick when I smell cherries.
The pills helped immensely till your swallowing 60+ pills now that's a bitch. Even pure powder gets me sick, but like stated before high dose imo are the most difficult as there feels like there is always a point of nausea that just needs to get past. Hmm I think I'm rambling now

Yep I had a phase of going overboard with the cough syrup and now the thought of it still can make me nauseous. It's a disgusting concoction.

DXM was horrible for me since the beginning, that menthol cherry flavor ergh! I heard Delsym was orange flavored? I'd be gargling the stuff if it was sold here, I love oranges!
But for me the most gag inducing repulsive chemical is SUBOXONE, now I'm really gonna dry heave -_-
Good thing in that sense was, I never resorted to that or done ever again, I will suffer cold turkey any day.

This is the exact reason I don't touch tequila anymore. The smell of it makes me gag.

definetly common. wouldn't worry about it to much. dxm is an awful drug to abuse in lg doses. its negative effects can continue for a bit but time heals mostthings.
