Misc duration of Tagamet

Hello all! I was curious as to the duration of the effects of Tagamet. I take between 600mg to 1000mg per day in the morning. Also, is it safe to take this amount daily for months or does one need to take a break from time to time? Having taken it for approx. 1 year, would one build a tolerance and therefore require a high does for the same effect? This pattern holds true for must drugs so it stands to reason that Tagamet would follow this path as well.
