Drugs for a Speech

I have to give a 10 minute speech for university this coming Friday. I'm nervous as fuck. I stutter and stammer when I get nervous. I have a few Percocets around and about 50 5 mg diazepam tabs. I normally need 150 mg of Valium for a buzz. But I'm not looking for a buzz; I'm looking to quell my anxiety. So what should I do, take, and how much of it?

Benzodiazepines and opioids are probably not ideal, since they'll probably cause some noticeable cognitive impairment leading you to possibly fucking up your speech.

Beta-blockers such as propranolol are ideal for performance anxiety, since they stop adrenaline and will relieve the physical and some of the psychological symptoms that come with being nervous/anxious.

If you are to use a benzodiazepine, make sure it is an incredibly low dose. They are at times, to those who are tolerant to their effects, reportedly used for speeches and performances anxiety.

Yes, I was aware the benzos produce cognitive impairment HOWEVER I thought that only occurred with hefty doses. So I take 150 mg to catch a buzz, so I figure I'll need about 50 mg just to settle my nerves. What do you think?

Trust me, I'll be more cognitively impair without drugs because I'll be so nervous that I'll forget what I had planned to discuss in my speech. Thus drugs are necessary. I don't think I can get my hands on Beta-blockers in such a short time. My doc already has me on sertraline and that, apparently, helps anxiety...

Benzos would be the ideal choice IMO. not a dose that's going to make you slur you speech or stumble on your words. Take what it takes for you to get high, and take 1/4 of that. Maybe a little less considering it takes you 150mg to get a buzz.

propanolol. its what the pros use. just the right dose, no slurring, head wobbling, its drops your blood pressure and you feel a million pound rock lift off you.

Beta Blockers are the best choice. Benzos will calm you but they will cause cognitive impairment which obviously only gets worse with higher dosing. If i couldn't get a beta blocker i may just try to sleep well and be prepared and possibly take a small dose of one of the downers i suppose. I've used clonazepam and percocet both in the past for scholarly presentations but it's not something i would make a habit of. In retrospect I think it made the speech a little bit worse, but i felt better internally at the time.

Even low therapeutic doses of benzos do cause some cognitive impairment (trouble with thinking, thinking slowly, poor memory, slow learning, etc) it just gets more noticeable if you take huge doses. If you're going to take Valium I would take a very low dose. I'm assuming it doesn't make you sleepy?

i used to use klonopin begore i gave my speeches, but my reg dose which was 1 mg i beleive it helped me, but agter a few speeches i was able to get myself into the mindframe that i didnt give a fuck, and i felt a lot better

Phenibut is great, altough rather unpredictable, as it takes 4-5 hours to kick in, but there is pretty much no cognitive impairment aslong as you don't use a ridiculous high amount. And if you don't have any tolerance with it I'd say youd have a rather good time aswell.

Phenibut. Seriosously. Take a dose of phenibut 3 hours before your on. Anxiety gone. Motivation there. Stimulatory parts there.

Highly recommend phenibut for these kind of things.

I would say go with your valium, but take 40-50mg at your tolerance. If you had an amp to go with, a low dose would help tremendously with the impairment.

i've had to give a few speeches in the last few months and benzos/etizolam don't work at all against the physical effects of speech anxiety. People would say i was shaking my arm but i didn't even notice, i didn't feel nervous but it was apparent that my body did to other people.

Everyone gets some anxiety from presentations/speeches but i am prone to shaking which drives me nuts and the only thing that helps with that are beta blockers. The best thing is to realize this is pretty normal and the more you do it, the better you'll get at it and not all people are meant to be in the spotlight and speak to a bunch of people.

awesome post chrom!! i couldnt have said it better myself..

i think the ideal drug to use would be a beta blocker like propanolol or cloninde. i have expeince in uing both for public speeches and presentations and i would rather have proanolololol than a benzo because with a benzo i would feel TOO COMFORTABLE and say shit that was inapropriate ir something koiololol

As others have said...

Definitely try a dose of propanolol (40mg-80mg). That is what a lot of professional musicians/actors will use when playing for auditions and in front of audiences...

The worst side-effect you may encounter is slight dizziness. My suggestion would be to try a 40-80mg dose beforehand to see how you react to it before you go and do it during your speech, not knowing what effect it may have on you...

Propanolol is also a non-controlled drug (And comes in both instant release and extended release formulations), so your primary care doc should be willing to prescribe it no problem... it can also be found online for future reference...

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Take care and be safe!

If you had an amp to go with

Amphetamines are anxiogenic, so I don't think that's the best idea.

but take 40-50mg at your tolerance.

I don't understand this. Are you recommending that the OP take 40-50 milligrams of diazepam? If so, that's simply outrageous and should be ignored to the furthest possible extent.

Phenibut. Anxiety reducing affects comparable to benzos. Confidence is greatened. And it will not affect your speech or leave you looking drugged in anyway.
