And if you like to hear actual songwriting versus overdone jamming - listen to Van Morrison: with headphones.

Astral Weeks, Moondance, His Band And The Street Choir,Tupelo Honey. Take your pick from the chronology. All good, all the time.

jefferson airplane, imported pink floyd on record, hmmm the doors? Also The Beatles Magicle Mystery Tour (spelling?).

A really under-appreciated band from the late 70s era is Rush... it's vaguely like Zeppelin, but much better in my opinion.

I really gotta check out Captain Beefheart.

^ Dont expect to be blown away by him. Expect to say "What the fuck?"

On a side note, if you do listen to Captain Beefheart, keep in mind, no drugs were involved in the making of his music I believe. He was just naturally weird; just like Frank Zappa. Infact they were good friends

Love, of course
those guys are hideously underrated
the whole Forever Changes album's pretty trippy. definately worth checking out.

^ Shit I cant believe I forgot to mention them. Forever Changes is up there as one of my favorite albums to listen to while tripping.

i second the band 'love'. i've been a big fan of arthur lee for a long time and saw him live in small clubs in boston and san francisco before and after he went to jail.

he's a living legend.

Rush - Hemispheres

Lucifer's Friend - Lucifer's Friend

Uriah Heep - Uriah Heep

Also, check out anything by this band called Pentagram. It's crazy dope-smokin' stoner doom metal from the seventies. I don't know if any of their old albums are even availiable on CD, but there's a couple compilations that you can get on Amazon or CDUniverse, just check the sound samples to see what you think.

Yeah!!

Now I like early prog rock/space rock too.

Try Gong's album called "Angel's Egg".

Gong was a British band from the early to mid 70's.

Jazzy, dreamy, very long songs and psychedelic as all hell.

Bob Dylan - Rainy Day Women

By far my favorite hippy song, it reminds me of my long lost aunt...I miss her so much and cannot find her. She used to run with the Yippies and Jerry Rubin. I have a picture of her on a VW bus with Dr. Hoffman and Rubin...it is the greatest picture I have...

Rush - Hemispheres

I have yet to check out Hemispheres... I think that will be my next CD purchase. I have 2112 and the hits album (Spirit of Radio), which are enough to tide me over for now.

If you like King Crimson, and Barrett-era Floyd, you'll most certainly like a little-known band from that time called Jethro Tull. I actually like them more than King Crimson, and their music is similar (British medieval folk-style psychedelic rock and roll)

Personally, my favorite Rush album is Signals from 1982, but most people aren't a fan of that era of Rush (they say there's far too many synthesizers), but I appreciate the great songwriting that they've always had and still displayed even on Signals. Hemispheres is fantastic, very progressive, and definitely within their old style if that's what you prefer.

Yeh, I much prefer their 70's stuff. Like most bands (Floyd, King Crimson, etc.) they turned GAY in the 80's. sorry... that's just what I think :\
