I just came across this:
Advertisement for youth

The Drug Policy Modelling Program at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre are conducting the first national study on youth attitudes to media reporting on illicit drugs. The study is being conducted for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and is open to anyone aged 16-24 who lives in Australia.

Over 2000 young people have now taken part. For those who haven’t yet contributed, this is your last chance to have a say.

DPMP want to be able to show the government and media outlets in Australia what young people think about media reporting on drugs. The more people we hear from, the more likely they are to listen

Why is this important?

· Drugs are one of the most topical issues of media reporting.

· Drugs are also the number one concern for Australian youth.

· Youth deserve a voice in how media report on drugs.

So if you’re aged 16-24 and live in Australia, and haven’t done our survey, we would love to hear what you think about media reporting on illicit drugs!

Visit www.drugmediasurvey.com to take our 10-20 minute online survey and you could win one of 10 $200 music vouchers!

This is a study about media reporting so you don’t need to have tried drugs to participate.

Thank you for your support!

So any you younguns want to throw in your 2c? I'm way too old and far to moral to pretend to be 18-24 :)

this is already in the header of the page. but thanks for sharing ;D

any publicity is good publicity;)

obviously i'm not a mod in here, but we don't mind these kind of reminders that pass through OD from time to time as they create more awareness - especially to the majority who don't even look at those links. we(in OD) have to use some creative thread titles from time to time to get peoples attention, especially those viewing here already intoxicated;) i hadn't even clicked that link until just now:D i'm just in the age barrier so i'm filling it out now.

i urge everyone else in the age bracket to fill it out as well.

Just completed. I found it to be a fairly decent survey.

I would find it interesting to know how the media affects the average bluelighter's opinion on drugs. For me personally it doesn't change anything as the vast majority of the time i feel i am better educated and better informed on the matter than most journalists.

50th post yay=D

I did this too. I agree, the media doesn't change my opinion. I think the point of the study is to find out whether positive articles, or not-negative articles, change young people's views on drugs. So I made sure I clicked that it doesn't change my opinion lol

Agreed, I'd say they pretty much don't influence blue lighters at all. I was trying to think about how a survey like that would've affected me prior to me taking an interest in the drug community.

But even doing that some of them still seem absolutely ludacris. For example as most people still have a general understanding of cannabis you know the articles that are and aren't exaggerated. But the ones more focused at MDMA, a few years ago I would have had no clue about and just assumed that the journalists had done their research. I'd certainly like to see the results to this survey in the upcoming months, but I'd like to see it from the generaly public rather then blue lighters because I already know how blue lighters will answer.

But this brings me to my next question, do you think a survey like this becomes miss skewed by blue lighters, or do you think it helps balance it out. I know if I was trying to to deter people from taking drugs, I would know that rubbish propaganda wouldn't work for people who have already tried such substances, but if I was trying to deter people who haven't tried and want them to never try then what is the right option?

The way I was brought up is that honesty is always the biggest strength, my parents raised me that way, however I've been suprised with how much they have against drugs, and because of this I choose to keep it a secret. But I find myself wondering if they are siding with the media and thinking that showing me all the worst stuff that can happen from drugs will deter me. Or if infact they are just so naive' that they don't actually know what is and isn't true.

I would very much love to see mandatory drug surveys implemented into highschools across the country. Myself and my peers didn't touch drugs (apart from cannabis) until after year 12. But yet a school that was just 15 mins drive from my school all my friends from there have been experimenting since year 11.

Any how... Do you guys think a survey like this is intended for people who already have some level of drug understanding, or do you think it was more aimed at people who have no idea and therefore automatically side with the media.

Also when I do surveys I find myself questioning what the motives are of the people who wrote the survey, for this survey I narrowed it down to a few things

A: They want to find out where the publics knowledge is in reguards to how hardful drugs are.

B: The amount people pay attention to drug articles and the most common place they find their information

C: Knowing what is the best detterants to drugs in reguards to media, e.g Completely over the top verses balanced and honest.

Just a few things for you guys to think about =D
Party safe ;)

I do wonder if the survey is part of this campaign:

http://www.drugs.health.gov.au/

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre are also running a year-long ecstasy use survey (done in quarterly waves)... I think I remember reading somewhere that it was linked to their Ecstasy: Face Facts campaign. I did the first wave of the survey, and there were questions about the government ads and what ecstasy users thought of them, namely the ones in that campaign.

I also work in the media, so I experience the never ending joy of reading oh-so-many drug related press releases. I may have read about it in a press release somewhere.

In any case, I regret doing the ecstasy survey, I'm sure no good will come of it.

What sort of questions were asked on the drugs and the media survey?

pretty much it would show articles and then have questions like "would this survey make you more likely to take drugs. Strongly agree - - - - Strongly disagree sort of thing.

It would've been better if you could give some feedback. I'd very much like to say that surveys that sayIF YOU SMOKE MARIUJANA YOU WILL DIE RARR etc etc bs Don't work because it's completely bias and unbelievable.

Still amazes me though how much my Anti-drug friends are so taken in by those sorts of articles though.

Yeah, I did this one. I was far more comfortable with the questions, it seemed like far more legitimate research than the ecstasy one.

If you smoke marijuana, even once, you will die. Duh. Everyone knows that. If you even look at a joint, there's a chance you might die.

Thanks Bluelighters - on behalf of DPMP - for all those who have taken part in the drug media survey. We've found it really important to include both users and non-users. Not only is this because we know a lot of young people have used drugs, but also because we expect that user and non-user views differ on media reporting on illicit drugs. Our results to date suggest this is true.

And just to allay your fears this is not a study about how to make people scared of drugs. We are however interested in seeing what people think about the dominant portrayals that appear in mainstream media. I am sure bluelight participants are aware of some of those!

Anyway thanks again and to anyone aged 16-24 who hasn't taken part (and is interested) please do so by Wed 21 April 2010 - www.drugmediasurvey.com.

We'll let you know the results!

Caitlin (and the team)

As a note, the official thread for this survey is over here in Drug Studies:
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=486726

Drug Studies contains a lot of research projects directed at Australians. As one of the mods at DS, I invite you all to have a look at the studies we are listing at the moment. We are keen not only for people to consider participating in the research, but to make constructive comments about the research projects and topics.

For example, the discussion you are having here about whether it's a good idea for Bluelighters to participate in research is one we have as a recurring theme in Drug Studies.
