Drugs affect your intelligence?

I don't know if this topic is appropriate for this forum but I figured I'd get the best responses here. What I am curious to see is if other people think that drugs have affected their actual intelligence, possibly their IQ, but also just feeling "slower" than they used to. I know that I definitely feel slower than I used to, although I dont believe I've been affected enough to make it bothersome, although I do miss doing well on those olympiads or whatever. My use is pretty broad, including dabbling in most everything. My current interest lies with meth though, which I feel has had more of an effect on my thought process than any other drug, while sober as well. So tell me what you guys think and include what drugs you've been using as well.
 
I feel smarter, although my use is moderated and my mind is still developing (I'm 19). Drugs probably have little to do with it.

Depends on the drug. Mushrooms make me feel "enlightened," but whether that's considered "smart," I don't know. IMHO it is, but whatever.
Comedowns, on anything, dull my thinking.
 
I don't mean feel dumb while on the drug, but rather if you feel dumber while sober after you have used a lot.

Do you mean in the following week or so or permanently afterwards?
This is the one issue that worries me about drugs. I'm not to bothered about if I end up in a mess during the night or something, I just worry I'll get thicker over a period of time. Hence I'm the only one out of my friends who does vitamin suppliments and anti-oxidants to reduce toxicity problems.

I've been using drugs steady for over a decade...hardcore use. Gone through countless heroin habits resulting in many horrible detoxs. I smoke crack and slam coke as much as possible. I've done benzos daily for years. I do meth off and on but when I do do it I slam it and smoke it for days staright till I think the CIA has surrounded my house. I've IVed countless pills, ritalin, addreall, oxycontin, dilaudid...
Currently I;m in my senior year in a chemistry program program at a reputable university and I;ve maintained a 3.6 GPA.
 
I've been using drugs for just shy of a decade. I've gone through every drug imaginable. Some were experimented with. Some were used in phases.
I feel that drugs affecting my overall intelligence for the most part. It largely depended on what drugs I was using.
During phases of moderate to heavy marijuana use, I was definantly not up to speed.
LSD boosted my overall desire to learn for a while and I was definantly much quicker when I first began using it. After a few years of using it at least once a week, I had lost so much focus and was so detached from reality that it was hurting me. I couldn't think straight and it basically gave me severe ADD for a while.
Ecstasy hurt me. Badly. It destroyed my memory. My sentences went from being fluid precise to having breaks between every word trying to remember the word I wanted to use and then forgetting what the hell I was talking about. It took me about two years of not using it to feel like my mental capacities were about normal again.
Mushrooms made me feel as if I had gained extraordinary intelligence in the sense that I had supernatural and spiritual connection to the universe. Yes, this persisted for months after use.
Heroin and painkillers have benefited me in some ways. My ability to write on heroin is amazing. Somehow when I'm writing on heroin I can just convery every thought with perfect organization and depth that I could never achieve sober. But otherwise it's neutral.
Meth increases my street smarts. I can read into people a lot better and have a better comprehending of what's going on around me.
Anything else I'm not mentioning didn't seem to influence any aspect of my intelligence enough in anyway to be notable.
 
The only drug I have enough experience with to say whether or not it affected my intelligence is pot.
Without a doubt this drug affected me. I mean my grades at school did not do a full 360, but this was in part to that once I started smoking I made it my duty to try harder in school to make sure my grades did not plummet. Still, I could notice my memory was suffering.. things were just harder to remember in general. I just came out of a class, and I try to remember what the instructor said about something in particular? BLANK
etc.. just things like that
 
Listen, don't blame drugs for ALL memory deficits etc. It's a fact that if you ask ordinary people if their memory have gotten worse the last 2-3 years, very many will say yes, if they care to admit it. Even young people. It's much worse in the cities, and the more intelligent they are, the more likely it is that they have noticed it. Probably it's mobile phones etc - but it's NOT the drugs!

Since I stopped using weed, my memory has improved very much.
 
i am an adamant believer that moderate (key word) drug use will have little to no adverse health consequences when done responsibly. as for IQ, i just took a certified test for free two weeks ago and scored a 172. fifteen points higher than when i took one three years ago when i didn't do any illegal drugs at all (except a little mj). btw, i'm 21.
 
Well, what concerns me is that I am only 16, and I don't plan on quitting drugs any time soon, although if it comes to that or losing my sanity (which feels like it is taking a turn for the worst as well), I will quit (I think). By the way, where do you take those certified free IQ tests, I took one on iqtest.com and got a 152, but I don't know how accurate it is, and I'm kind of curious to know.
 
Around 1905 many schoolchildren had to learn THE WHOLE S:T JOHN GOSPEL and HALF S:T MATTHEW word for word. Wonder if ANYBODY today could do that? I agree that weed can temporarily blur the memory. But after smoking 3-4 years and stopping, I got my glorious memory BACK! Yes it was even better than before after 6 months.
But these last years...almost 80% of my friends say the same thing as I do - that they have got impaired short-term memory the last 2-4 years. So something is in the air. At least here in Scandinavia. We have by far the highest number of cell phones per capita in the world. What else could cause it?

In moderation I dont think drugs have that much of an effect on intelligence, anything taken to an extreme is dangerous, shit oxygen will kill you, so will jerking off 24/7. I've done nearly every drug in the book except maybe heroin. as stated before The key here is moderation..I attend one of the top schools in the nation and maintain a high gpa and many of my fellow peers enjoy the consumption of hard drugs. All of them are fairly successful and shit one of them got into THE top law program in the country. The only problem i have ever encountered is the amotivational side effect of pot, which i counter with a psychostimulant of course. This may be a moot point because the effects of a drug varies from person to person. An already existing deficience in intelligence or memory may be exacerbated by the use of drugs... by the way the IQ is not a very viable test for intelligence so i wouldnt look into score changes very much

yasmapal: those online iq tests usually aren't very accurate from what i've read. the study i read contained statistical distribution and error curves that showed error offsets of as much as 25 points.
and in response to WeekapaugGruv, intelligence is a very fuzzy word. IQ tests are certainly not a good measure of how smart you are, but they do very accurately judge relative cognative potential. IQ measures things such as problem solving ability, spacial comprehension, language comprehension, immediate memory capacity, and complex pattern recognition amoung others.

Intellegence?
that word is to universally abused. Usually on this linear scale that particularly doesn't exist.
drugs are part of my life now. They weren't at a certain point. I don't know if I'm more or less intellegent. I'm just different.
I like where I am now. I'm comfortable AND happy with where I am now.

it's just a word.
