Drug testing for work in CA

Im currently on a job search right now, and my first job did not drug test whatsoever. At the moment im pretty desperate and willing to work in retail, alot of these applications talk about drug tests. I dont really have anything to worry about except for pot, id be willing to get clean for a job interview but im afraid it would be on short notice or something. Then I thought about how many people in Cali smoke weed and manage to get jobs. I was wondering if a positive for marijuana would prevent one from getting the jobs, it seems to stay in the system the longest and its the least troublesome drug out there. I know I wouldnt hire any junkies if I was ever an employer, but if someone got a positive for MJ and he/she gives me the right impression id probably smoke a bowl with the guy and then tell him hes hired. As you all can see, I practically live in my imagination sometimes and I need some feedback on everyone elses experience with work and drug screens.
 
short answer: it depends

long answer: it depends on the employer. if it is some corporate retail thing you are looking at, you can probably rule out testing positive for pot and getting hired. my gut tells me that anyone that doesn't care if a prospective employee smokes pot probably doesn't spend money testing people anyway, though.

if they spend the money testing you, and you fail, you will not get the job.

this is almost certainly the wrong forum for this, but i've been the 'victim' of drug tests... more than once... so, whatever. :D

if you want the job, stay off the drugs.
 
im in southern california and a lot of places have applications that say by signing it you consent to a drug test or whatever but a lot of times they dont test. You should find an employee that looks like they might blaze and ask them about it, or maybe go to the same store in a different location and ask so they wont recognize you at the place you apply to.
 
hmmmm normally id just shut this down as there are no drug testing threads allowed, but this isn't your normal "omg im gunna show up dirty what should i do?!?!11!" thread.

It really depends on the company, my girlfriend got hired in a corporate setting even though she tested positive for pot. If you are a skilled worker that brings something good to the company there is a chance you might get hired, who knows.. the hiring decision might be left up to someone that also tokes.
 
^I agree. I think if you present yourself in a confident and able enough manner in the interview, you will get the job regardless. I've gotten jobs that drug tested before, after heavy smoking for months up to a week before. Smoking weed is such a habit that the idea of stopping for a shitty job is too alien for me, I didn't expect to get the job but I figured there was nothing to lose. I was one of the first people they chose to hire from that group.
 
marijuana is legal in california for medicinal purposes, so your chances of getting hired with a positive test are probably better here than most places. personally i would just clean up as much as possible while on the job search and proceed as if everything is legit. a lot of places have a drug test option written into their application process but don't actually perform it. your top priorities should be doing your research on the company/position and then nailing the interviews. if a job i really wanted had a drug testing policy i would probably take it and hope for the best. it's not like it goes onto your criminal record or anything if you fail.
