It looks as though a petition, which will be presented to the Queensland Parliament has been started. It's focus is on the need for medically-supervised injecting facilities (safe injecting rooms) in Queensland. If you would like to sign it, or simply read it before it is presented to Parliament, then visit the Queensland Government 'E-Petition' website at http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petitions

It only takes 3min to complete.

Can 17 year olds sign in?
It doesn't state anything about age.. I assume not?

(1) You meet the eligibility requirement specified for the E-Petition. This means that you fall into one of the three broad groups of petitioners:

(a) Queensland residents;
(b) Queensland citizens; or
(c) Queensland electors in a nominated electorate.

If you live in Queensland, then, yes you can sign the document.

Signing the petition is an excellent way to start the ball rolling on drug law reform (ie. decriminalisation and legalisation), especially as this one, unlike most, WILL BE TABLED IN THE QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT.

The more people signed on it, the more influence it will have, particularly as this year is election year in the sunny State of Queensland.

The Petition statement

Need for medically-supervisd injecting facilities in Queensland

"Queensland Residents draws to the attention of the House to the fact that one of the key pillars of the National Drug Strategy and the 2011-2012 Queensland Drug Action Plan is harm reduction. One strategy of harm reduction used in other jurisdictions, but not in Queensland, are medically-supervised injecting facilities. Jurisdictions with such amenities have found that these facilities can facilitate harm reduction by reducing: the amount of overdoses; the number of ambulance call-outs; the spread of blood borne diseases caused by the sharing of needles; and the number of hospital beds delegated to overdose patients.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to provide genuine harm reduction strategies by establishing medically-supervised injection facilities in Queensland."

To sign this petition go to http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petitions and click on the "Need for medically-supervised injecting facilities in Queensland' heading.

Essentially, an effective health system such as one which provides safe injecting rooms would have economic benefits for the wider, not only drug using, public. Meaning tax revenue could go towards other services.

I believe there was a meeting last year about injecting stalls/rooms in Brisbane, and a few members in here went to it, said it went great.
