Drug education in school

I actually still have mine somewhere :)
Needless to say, they put a little more thought into the ribbons the next year ;)

Help With my paper: why cops shouldnt teach drug education

Hey BL I'm not sure where this would go so I'm just going to post it here in hopes it gets moved to the proper location.

I'm writing a research essay, and my thesis is currently:
Police officers should not be the primary source of drug education in schools. This is because police officers are not qualified in the subject matter, are more likely to focus too narrowly on the criminal repercussions of drug use, and lend themselves to an authoritarian rather than interactive mode of instruction.

I think my weakest point is the second one, and am thinking of pulling it out but cannot find a replacment.

What do you guys think? why should police officers not be the primary source of drug education in schools?

The reason I'm pulling the second supporting point is that after conducting my research, it turns out that officers don't only focus on the criminal consequences (atleast with D.A.R.E.) in fact they have curriculum based on self esteem among other things.

The proposal is due tomorrow, any help would be appreciated.

Also feel free to use this thread to discuss the subject matter as well if you so please.

If They really want kids to learn about drugs they should send in ex-drug addicts that actually know first hand what can happen. Most of those cops just preach the whole drugs are bad thing cuz they are supposed too. They havnt done their own research to find how they actually feel. I make this assumption because when some of my friends have gotten caught with newer drugs like mephedrone the cops had no idea what it was and just ended up letting him go even tho he had 40g of the shit on him. They also looked through his phone saw texts about molly and thought it was slang for coke hahahahaha. Cops need to be doing research to keep up with the drug scene and they just have know idea of whats out there now a days.

Police officers are not trained in pharmacology.

A police officer teaching kids about drugs, is akin to a traffic warden teaching kids about car mechanics.

They may both be 'involved' with the subject matter, but they don't necessarily have an in depth knowledge.

i would think that someone with status such as a medical doctor who has worked with addicts would trump police .

a social worker type that works in the recovery racket would be bogus IMO.

throwing an addict whether clean or not would not stand up to scrutiny . i say that as a former heroin addict who would most certainly have school children rolling their eye if i were before them citing the multiple miseries that substance abuse brings in it's wake.

I merged these threads since they are both about drug education in schools. You may also want to check out this thread for more ideas for your research paper.

When DARE came to my school, they were talking about how you see things that aren't there and how there are these amazing colors.

Of course I'd wanna try that! Never said it would be something you would crave for the rest of your life.

Yea....They did a pretty bad job of discouraging pretty much every drug except for meth from what I remember.

I think that the media spin has a lot to do with it. Look at good ole Charlie Sheen. If coke was a corporation, he would be hired to speak for them. Its stuff like this that would work to get kids to stop smoking. Its unethical, its silly, and yes its completely untrue, but it would work, or so I think. Glorified drug use, distrust of officers, and successful people using drugs makes them extremely seductive. Poor lifestyle choices, like my own, makes me seek refuge from conditions, and although they cover the symptoms of my problems, they don't solve it.

What needs to be done isn't drug education necessarily, and not scare tactics, but a way to make people stop wanting drugs. You would do best to educate people, but its in a way encouraging the usage, which the scare tactics also do. Harm reduction is better obviously, but I'm not going to listen to officers saying that weed is evil, when it clearly isn't.

my D.A.R.E officer was....

The sad thing was when I was in fifth grade I was really into D.A.R.E I even made posters against people drunk driving or doing drugs. I guess you could say I was a good kid. Anyways I had this D.A.R.E officer who I looked up to well we all did. At our graduation thing for D.A.R.E we all took separate pictures with him and I still have it somewhere but packed away. Now fast forward to let's say ninth grade or was it sophomore year I had already moved to a new state but my grandma sent me this newspaper article. My D.A.R.E officer had a threesome in the police station and they were caught. I was like wtf and I listened to this lying scumbag.... For all I know he was forced to do D.A.R.E because of offenses he probably did before and I can't remember them all. It was kind of a shock/sad to know a person you looked up to as a kid was really like that.

Well besides the point have you've delt with any police officers like this? Or any other one who has pushed your buttons? I know there are good cops out there but still some.... I hope I am posting this in the right section and if not I'm sorry and you can move it or close it if you want?

D.A.R.E. sucks.

I believe studies have shown that since the introduction of both the D.A.R.E. and "Just Say No" campaigns, more high school students have reported doing drugs.

Now that's not counting the ones who didn't admit to using them. My school's SRO (School Resource Officer, they called the ones that hung out in schools) was a typical cop.

I once overheard one of the administrative staff from the school talking shit about him, and how all the other officers in the department hated him...they only allowed him to have two bullets in his gun...etc. I almost felt sorry for the guy. Almost.

^yeah I mean I was a fifth grader so of course I would believe all that crap. Now when I look back at it all I want to do is shake my head. As a matter of fact that year I found out about that officer was the year I started drinking and doing drugs. No it wasn't because of him it just was a coincidence but yeah my mom told me she never liked that cop....now I know why.

Also that officer you spoke about shouldn't even have been one. If no one liked him why force teens or younger kids to be around him. Let alone the fact they only trust him with two bullets.

By the way if they are going to have programs like this they should have officers that actually care and not just ones who were forced to do it because of an offense. I noticed a lot of D.A.R.E officers to be not so good people. The female one that was also at my school tried to have a relationship with my father when she knew he was with my mother.... Yeah crazy story.

That's horrible. Just proves your point though :/

What's wrong with dude fuckin 2 bitches in the station? Shit if anything you should respect him more. I got some respect for him and don't even know him haha.

My DARE officer was....the 2nd person to arrest me for drugs. Fuckin asshole. I might forgive him if I hear about him bangin out two bitches in the station.

^no, it wasn't just that. He had some drug offenses too but its kind of grimey when a guy who is looked up at by kids does that kind of shit.

It wasn't two bitches it was him another male and one female cop.

I won't but still makes me go wtf. Well yeah cops in where I use to live were all low lives. I did have this cool cop though who drove me to my cousins but he was texting on the highway and going over the line kind of...then he blew red lights because no one was around. I found all that funny. He also helped carry my bag of clothes and this was after I got kicked out of my bros girlfriends she was a psycho bitch. Even he agreed with me and told me she was crazy. What an awesome dude. I have respect for some cops but not all.

Okay, this is inspired by a comment on another dicpscussion board.

In today's school systems, kids are taught that drugs are bad and that if you start using you'll eventually turn into a homeless junkie or die.

nothing new, thats exactly what they told us in the 70's when i was at school.

Like leary said, "lsd sometimes causes psychotic behavior from people who haven't done it"
