Drug based literature/books

Curtis; The second book you are looking for might be called "Food of the Gods" by Terence McKenna. I cant be sure but that book definately covers some of the issues you were talking about.

Speaking of which I suggest you all read "out of it" by Stuart Walton. Very good book. This book actually mentions Terence McKenna several times, though not in an entirely favourable light.

Re: Burroughs "JUNKY" .....

i havent read the entire book but have read enuff to where i can easily see that although he tells it like it happened, this book is ANTi-drug is anything imo...i just remember reading posts on here claiming this guy is pro-opiod afer reading this book..i disagree...quote below sums it up for me..

"junk takes everything but gives nothing but insurance against junk sickness"

just curious as why people think he glorified it...

I don’t think he was trying to promote or discourage opioid use, but simply paint a semi-honest picture of his own abuse.

After a certain point I think most junkies would agree with the line you quoted.

My drug library:

doors of perception and heaven and hell - 1st part is Huxley's "trip report" from his mescaline experience, written very well. 2nd part is collection of his intellectual/philosphical musings on the experience

DMT: The spirit molecule - besides containing an interesting theory on DMT in the body and the mystical experience, and trip reports from his subjects, the most valuable aspect of this book for me was the whole process he had to go through to get FDA/DEA approval for his study, framing his research, and the aftermath/conclusions

Entheogens and the Future of religion - just a collection of essays on religious use of psychoactive compounds by noted people in the field, like Wasson

PIHKAL & TIHKAL - these books are like the bible to me. can't wait for his 3rd one...

Pharmacotheon - written by J. Ott, it's a nice "general" overview of things, including their history, chemistry, pharmacology, etc. huge bibliography at the end too, good for research

Breaking Open the head - an engaging journalistic style narrative

Ayahuasca Visions - great "coffee-table" book, filled with colorful visions drawn by a former shaman. also has detailed explanations of the elements in each vision, very interesting cultural info

Ayahuasca: human conciousness and t he spirits of nature - great overview on ayahuasca, including spiritual, mature trip reports and a scientific paper by mckenna at the end with excellent info on traditional beta-carboline/DMT doses in shamanic brews

the electric-koolaid acid test - fun read on the 60's drug culture surrounding Kesey's group

politics of psychopharmacology by leary - not a big fan of leary's work. this book seemed silly

The Psychopharmacology of Herbal Medicine: Plant drugs that alter mind, brain, and behavior - pharmacology info for various compounds that is not difficult to understand

i thinkthat's all

just started reading Linda Yablonski's "The Story of Junk" two days ago and am already halfway through. Good little story about a woman who gets busted and then discusses her past, how she got turned on to heroin, started dealing, etc.

Ecstasy by Irvine Welsh

Bright Light's Big City by Jay McInerney - ok, so it's not essentially about drugs, but hey, they are still pretty central to the novel. A truly amazing read.

^^^
Ecstacy is a bloody hard read for a while, even as someone who grew up completely addicted to all brittish shows i could get my hands on.

^ I looved "Ecstasy" - have read it twice. Title tale is great story about personal growth & drug use intertwined.

"Diary of a drugfiend" is a hoot. Basically, an exposition of what "Do what you will shall be the whole of the law - love is the law, love under will" really means. It's an OK idea - even if Crowley is clearly an egotistical misogynist cunt.

Terrence McKenna is a twat - he's had far too much DMT to make much sense. I've seen him talk about his fractal theory of time and it's pure bollocks. Read his books at your peril!!!

Phillip K Dick blew my mind as a teenager and made me want to take powerful drugs as soon as possible. Check out "A scanner darkly", "Flow my tears the policeman said", "A maze of death", "Do androids dream of electric sheep" etc etc. He only started to go off for me when he became a semi-christian ("Valis" etc) - but even then, still writing great psychological dramas with flip-flop realities in them.

I must recommend J G Ballard here as well - not necessarily because of obvious drug use in his books, but because of the hallucinatory nature of the worlds he creates. Try "The unlimited dream company", "The crystal world", "Hello america", High Rise", "Running wild" etc etc

"Out of it" (stuart walton) is good - in the same vein try "Saying yes - in defense of drug use" Jacob Sullum

I love Burroughs too - what about "The soft machine"? Cut up craaayyyzzeee!

philip k. dick is THE SHIT. all the books the ayjay mentioned are excellent, especially "a scanner darkly" and "flow my tears the policeman said". "radio free albemuth" and "lies inc." are also both EXCELLENT books.

I dont think anybody has mentioned this book yet...

Tiger in a Trance - Max Ludington / Doubleday 2003

Takes place in the mid 1980's the main character is a 18 yr old full time Deadhead, traveling the country following the band with his friends. He drifts into the world of lsd sales and drugs. Soon he is battling an addiction to heroin.

Pretty Good read, not a super lot of junky bizness but its not your typical drug-a-log.

I'm still walking, so I'm sure that I can dance,
Just a saint of circumstance,
Like a tiger in a trance

Anybody know of any other books with a similar focus? On the back of the jacket this was written:

"The Grateful Dead have been the backdrop of many novels, but Tiger in a Trance is the first one to portray the lives of the Deadheads themselves. The dialog is fantastic--sharp, economical, and authentic. This excellent first novel will certainly last as long as the Dead's music will."
-Jim Carrol, Author of The Basketball Diaries
