The injured driver of a car involved in a double-fatal smash tried to discharge himself from hospital after he returned to consciousness.

Mother and daughter Karin Tritton, 56, and daughter Makayla, 18, were killed in the in Brisbane's east on Christmas Day.

Mark Veneris, 46, from Capalaba, has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

His out-of-control BMW veered over a median strip and collided with the car occupied by the Trittons, who were on their way to see relatives.

Sister Tarmeka, 23, and father Lawrence, 55, from Narangba, were taken to hospital.

Police are currently awaiting the results of a blood test to see whether Mr Veneris was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

Mr Veneris reportedly admitted to police having a history of drug and alcohol addiction.

Officers also allegedly found a "still warm" drug pipe inside his car, the Courier Mail reports.

It is understood that his father died in July last year.

Mr Veneris was granted bail at a hospital bedside hearing Tuesday.

Meanwhile Tarmeka and father Laurence remain in a stable condition in hospital. Tarmeka has a broken ankle, while Laurence is suffering from a fractured vertebrae.

The death of Karina and Makayla have left a local community in shock, with friends variously describing Makalya – a promising junior tenpin bowling representative – as "a beautiful soul", "selfless" and "loveable".

“I was absolutely crushed," best friend Maddy Kemp, 21, told the Courier Mail.

"Receiving that phone call broke me into so many pieces I couldn’t count.”

Senior Sergeant Lukia Serafim was among one of the first officers to reach the family and said "as a wife and a parent" she found the scene to be "very, very difficult to deal with".

Snr Sgt Serafim also described the painful task of having to answer one of the family member's ringing phones and speak to a relative, waiting at a lunch for the Trittons, just two minutes away.

Road Policing Command Superintendent David Johnson said the "horrendous" crash had left many "quite traumatised" – police officers included.

"A number of police officers were crying," he said yesterday.

A friend has told the Mail Mr Veneris has been struggling with the death of his father in July last year.

Two people have been killed and 97 injured on Queensland roads since the beginning of the Christmas period break on December 23.

Pretty dumb comment to make as someone is dead.

Save those comments for liveleak etc

Sorry I don't get out much, No disrespect was intended. Liveleak sounds like a site that contains content that would cause me to pass out no thank you.

Given that it would take a little time to get into the car and bag up evidence, its unlikely the pipe would be still warm from use just prior to the crash. I wonder if he had a toke just after or it wasnt really that warm.

They dont say if there was still a bubble of gear in the pipe or drugs found, just the pipe.

Regardless, yeah hes likely got it in his system. So he could have lost control because of that or distraction or also using his phone.

In any event, his history of deaths in the family etc is all well and good but hardly an excuse to be careening all over the road.

Im suprised they didnt drug and alcohol test him then and there but blood tests are more accurate.

He doesnt appear to have previous police encounters due to drugs.

RIP to the victims.

Yeah he's fucked most likely. I've done stupid shit behind the wheel and gotten lucky. In fact most people have

How can the pipe still be warm ?

Really?

It is Queensland summer and its bound to be warm in a smashed up car.

I kinda doubt it. Thats likely laying it on a bit thick for attention grabbing headline. Hes got alcohol issues too but nothing else mentioned besides admitting a problem to police. Since he was able to speak to them he would have been abke to be breathalysed.

His test results would be known by now anyway, it doesnt take very long.

Since hes been identified and on tv reports has been named a drug driver (minus the usual alleged part), police should hence release these results, I dont think they usually do though. Roadside alcohol levels are usually allowed to be reported.

Its a horrible tragedy regardless, having an implement is an offence in itself but until the tests are done to confirm drugs its shit to declare he is a drug driver.
