Dreadlocks

I don't think so. The originality & style of a person's locks is completely different from any other person, because of a person's hair & its texture. Whether its thin, thick, wavey, loose, etc. I've seen people with 2 ponytail-type locks and thats madd original. And I've seen people with hundreds of little braids to micro-braids that are locks and thats their style.

I think for something to be trendy is for people to like one particular style and try to copy it. WIth locks you can try to copy the look & locks like another person, but it will never happen because it all depends on your personal hair & its texture and also the technique used to lock your hair, the products used in your hair, and above all your maintenance of your hair

me personally I've always wanted locks cause I hate going to barber shops to cut my hair, but then again, I didn't want a nappy look, so locks seem as my only option. And I can keep my locks looking clean & good & tight and with that I don't have to worry about going to a barber shop ever again

I've had dreads for a long time two years ago, oh, well, it seemed like a long time. Anyway, I had a dread perm, in my opinion the only way to do them properly. Like MOS said, it's done in about 3 to 4 hours and although it may cost a lot of money, you won't have the chance to fuck it up if you let professionals do their job. You will look extremely silly for about a week after with the perm, but no matter, after a while and a lot of wax later, you'll have perfect dreadies. Maintenance is also extremely important if you don't want smelly/filthy dreads, washing them with special shampoo is fairly effective, but after a couple of years it won't really work anymore, you'd have to wax them and wash them. Wax makes the shit and also the hairs stick together, washing makes it clean but will also make them fall apart. After a couple of years it just won't work as good as it used too, that's why I got rid of them, didn't feel much like having that stuck on my head.. :)

Oh and swimming with them is really weird the first couple of times, but as is all the first couple of times, it won't make any difference for them, swimming in salty water is good for them too, soo..

if jsg has dreads then its trendy ;)
im actually going to look into this dread perm thing... my hair is long again and ive always wanted to lock it. i have two friends with dreads, one just let her hair go wild and another had a friend do it when she was in oz... i much prefer the ones that you have put in and maintain yourself. when you let your hair dread itself you tend to have hair that never attached, so you can look like a birds nest... unless youre a full-time student, its not so easy to find work with a ratty head.... oh, and ive helped people put in dreads and wax seems to hurt more than it helps.

LOL@ Amazon Bee

I would imagine that wax never gets out of your hair, attracts clumps of debris, traps water that cannot escape and will probably end up causing mildew, and in fact hinders the dreading process as it keeps all the hair in place (so it can't get knotty and such).

but i wouldn't know first hand :)

i had dreads and i sooo sooo loved them, cut them off on an acid come down because they were talking to me and cried for days over it (but thats a whole other story :p) I miss them and i don't....I really learn alot about myself from having them :) I had mine for a total of nine months.

When i got mine my hair was just past my shoulders and when i dreaded them up they shrunk to my chin (your hair will considerable get shorter after dreading) I started doing mine and was doing them over about 2 weeks until i realised i was useing the wrong method for my hair type and my friend said he would do them for me. It too him nine hours and he done them by pretty much knotting up pieces and rolling them in his hands.

They looked liked dreads but they looked kinda weird (like they weren't done by natural process ie over a ceratin long period of time)

Hard part about having dreads is that you have to be prepared by how society will treat you......it will change how other people look at you (especially the older generation and its usually negative because having dreads comes with generalisations) but its part of having dreads and you learn to live with it and get used to and learn about your strength at the same time :)

Another hard part about them is that for the first year (or even more maybe) they are so far from maintence free it's not funny...you have to wax them every few days while they are new to make sure they stay together. Keep them seperated all the time so they don't 'clump', wash them with special soap, dry them througholy (otherwise you will end up smelling like a wet towel) You do only need to wash them once or twice a week though because they generally don't actually get that dirty (although if you have an oily scalp you need to wash your scalp) and if your used to washing your hair daily you might get a dry flaky scalp if you wash them less regulary because of teh lack of ol your hair will produce.

Only way to remove them is to cut them off...once you have dreads thats kinda it

Dreads look good on anyone no matter what colour or gender etc. after seeing your pic i actually have to say that you would especially suit them...you have the face for it :) They grow to suit your head and it's shape and they take on a life of their own as they are growing and your are emotionally developing (my belief anyway....comes from a rastafarian belief about being in tune with your spiritual side and having your hair connected to that....if your comfortable with who you are you will have heaps great looking ones =D ) and its how we are actually naturally supposed to look like (look at primitive and tribal days etc) before combs were invented :p

I recomend that you do them yourself and/or get friends to help you with them...they will look much nicer if they are donw over a long period of time and form their own way. I personally don't like the fake ones because well to be honest they just look plastic and yuck (sorry to those that have fake ones...just my opinion)

I like natural , messy , knatty dreads..thats what dreads are supposed to look like =D They dont have to be completly ferral or dirty looking (that not what i mean) perfect ones are just borinmg is all. They have their own personality and hopefully will reflect yours too :)

Get em done! they are truley heaps fun to have (even with all the trouble and effort)

I'm thinking of getting braids put in. My friend got hers donw and she looks fantastic but i don't wanna copy :( Although i said that to her and she said i should because i would get totally different coloured ones that she got and hers are starting to fall out already (which kinda puts me off because they are expensive) ok sorry rambling......i'm on lots of caffine bbbuuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i could talk about this topic all day too actually even though i dont have mine anymore hehehe =D

i would like to (because i am really comforable with who i am now...and at the time that i had mine i wasnt and was having quite a few few issues so thats why i think mine ended up looking kind of strange :\ ) but my hair takes forever to grow and its been quite some time since i chopped them off (nearly a year even maybe) and my hair has only finally *nearly* reaching my chin and by the time my hair grows to at least past my shoulders again ( and i would prefer to wait until its even longer) will be about 3-4 years which by then i would have finished my degree and will be a teacher...dont think i'll have much luck finding a job in a school with dreadies aye? :p

i'll be teaching primary school so it's highly unlikely i think :( I would love to have them again and if my hair grows long enough before i'm actually a teacher i will most likely get them again (would depend on how i felt about them at the time i guess) :)

Actually, I have not my own braided extensions before, and if you DIY it's pretty cheap. I spent less the $50 on the hair.

My hair was only about 2" in that picture. How long that last depends on 3 things - how tighty you braid them, how quickly your hair grows, and how often you wash them (causes sliipage at the root).

^^^^ that looks wicked!!!! i wanted pink, purple and red ones...we have very similar tastes in hair =D I'm not sure if i could do them myself though :\ how long did it take you to do? how hard was it?

Thanks!!!

I spread it over a couple days, it just depends on how quick your shoulder tire out, or if you can get some friends to help :)

I found it to be pretty easy, I used this site as a guide (same site I posted previously for fake dreads).

I highly recommend getting silky straight braid hair from Doc Lock's - great colours, and my pink was very UV reactive :)

I don't really know how to braid (only plait) even with instructions i don't think i'd be able to do it *cries* although i coulld get a friend who does know i guess :p I definitely can't afford to get them done professionally yet anyway

and UV reactive...that is just too sick =D hehehe just about all the parties i go to (the doofs) use alot of black lighting for the art etc so that would be mad hehehe

you have me all excited now to get braids for sure LOL =D

errrr i dunno...here we have plate which is where you weave three strands of hair in a certain way and a braide i'm not sure how many strands but it's done in a different way...my mum never knew how to do it so i never learnt but i know in oz there is a difference... how many packets would i have to get?.... ummm we are also taking over this thread :/ pm me back? :)

Your plait is our braide.

Maybe your braid is our french braide.
