Hello, I am a chronic pain patient new to Stamford CT, having moved from the West Coast. There seems to be a paranoia here about prescribing opiates for pain. <snip>

Can anyone offer any suggestions about how to find a new prescriber who will be professional and compassionate after moving to a new place all the way across the US?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to BL Krondp!

For better or worse, discussions on sourcing doctors or pharmacies is prohibited on BL.

If you have a legit script then pharmacies should all honor it. Sometimes small mom and pop operations are more compassionate than major retailers, but frankly I’ve never had issues with the big chains like CVS and Walgreens.

In terms of finding a new local prescriber, you’ll need to probably do a pain management clinic. I mean, that’ll probably be the most accessible.

Yes, they’ll make you jump through lots of hoops. Yes, you’ll have to have documentation regarding your condition(s)/need for pain meds.

But that’ll be the case pretty much regardless. Hopefully you’re on good terms with your old prescriber. Asking them to talk to your new doctor will help big time when it comes to making sure your treatment continues appropriately.

Other than that feedback, there isn’t much else we can do for you. If you want to learn how to deal with pain management or doctors offices after moving, we can help you with that. But we cannot help you find a specific doctor, pharmacy or try to game the system (not assuming you are, just wanted to mention it).

I know how hard this stuff can be. We have some people in Drugs in the Media forum who have been through this process with pain medication issues. Might be good to search them out, peer support and whatnot.

As a general rule, if you have a history of substance use disorder or mental illness on your medical records, the stigma associated with that will make what you’re trying to do really unpleasant. But if you need it you need it, and if you keep trying you’ll figure something out.

Pain management clinics can be a real pain in the but, but try to be patient with the process if it’s what you end up trying. Probably a better option than trying to find a GP to prescribe just after moving.

(I’m going to edit your post to remove the prohibited request. Sorry, nothing person, just BL policy. Might be good to review the User Agreement you consented to when you activated your account on here. It’s in my sig “BLUA”. Good luck!)
