Opioids doxycycline and narcotics

I've never posted before, so please bear with me. I take a lot of narcotics (primarily Kadian and oxycodone) to control the pain of Degenerative Disc Disease. I recently started taking Doxycycline, and every day that I'm on them I feel more and more like I'm in withdrawal. I have nasty RLS, increased pain, and I can't sleep. Is there any chance the drugs are interacting to cause this?

Thanks for any help.

Well it's an antibiotic so I wouldn't think so, but according to the Wikipedia page on it, doxycycline and other tetracycline antibiotics induce CYP450 enzymes, therefore hastening the metabolism of your opioids by an unknown amount.

Did the same doctor who Rx's your pain meds Rx you the antibiotics as well?

Not the same doctor...

but the same pharmacist filled the order. And the doc who prescribed the antibiotic knows about my pain meds.

That bit about increasing metabolism might be a clue. I've been told by docs and others that I tend to metabolize meds very quickly anyway. A chemist friend of mine once accused me of having three livers.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the Wikipedia page, but I guess that part didn't jump out at me. I think I'll go read it again.

Thanks.

What are you taking the doxycycline for? are you sure the RLS, exacerbated pain and insomnia aren't caused by being sick?

I really doubt it.

I'm taking it for a small acne rosacea patch on my face. I'm not even sure if the symptoms are really symptoms, and no, I'm not sure of anything. I take several other kinds of meds--blood pressure, seizure control, anti depressant--and it's possible that one of those is messing with me.

^ How long have you been experiencing these WD effects though? Since you started the doxycycline it sounded like you were saying. Those other meds could be adding to the problems with metabolism though possibly.

Pain, RLS and insomnia are not typically side effects of antidepressants (SSRI?), anticonvulsants or antihypertensives but its possible they play a role.

Do you have depression and or anxiety? Those seems like more likely culprits to interfere with sleep, exacerbate pain and cause restlessness than the medications to treat them.

Have things been particularly stressful lately? depressing?
