less is more sometimes.
w01fg4ng i agree with a lot on not paying attention to the media, it keeps a person sane today. (grinds my gears about those bright, plastic tipped toy guns.)
what i agree with you on Jess is plastic guns becoming widespread use in mass shootings is unlikely today. it is possible to create a very nearly perfect simulation of one but unlikely due to lack of access and info. the mass production of them and wide spread use wont be for a long time... hopefully not ever.
Plastic guns as we use the word plastic today will never be a problem because of physics.
But, as I said earlier today, the technology to "3d print" real, deadly, metal guns has existed for a long time and is pretty widely available. It's just called a CNC machine.
The reason home made guns has never been a significant problem is because, well, it's just not that hard for criminals to get guns to start with. Even in countries with strong gun laws, criminals can still easily get ahold of guns.
And as for mass shootings, your common criminal isn't the same person as your mass shooters. School mass shooters largely get their guns from a parent or family member or someone close to the family. Also they want to kill a lot of people which means they need a reliable weapon, which rules out most poorly built home made firearms.
And no matter how you get the gun, you still have to find a way to get the bullets. You'll never be able to 3d print the ammo with any technology remotely like what we're talking about today.
Simply put, if you can get ahold of the ammo, odds are you can probably get ahold of the gun too.
Theres just not a problem to worry about here. The reality simply doesn't match up with how people imagine it.
Which is great news! 3d printing is an amazingly useful technology, so it's great that it also poses no real risks to society. Say you have a dish washer or something. Some appliance. And it breaks. Wouldn't you love to live in a world where you can just go online, find the replacement part, and print it out and fix it right there and then? Cause it's coming. It's just that like every great technological advancement. There are naysayers and fear mongers and ignorant people trying to hold back progress. But they will fail. As they have every time without exception since the dawn of civilization. With future generations looking back on them and wondering how people could have been so backward in the past.
