Dose DXM have a permanent impact on an adolescent brain?

I caught my 15 year old cousin drinking a whole bottle of cough syrup... I'm not going to go into what I'm going to do about it but I was hoping you guys in ADD could help me understand the effects it may be having on his brain. I know DXM isn't good for you in general but all DXM brain impairments that I've heard of went away with time. That being said I understand that a 15 year old's brain is still developing. What could he be expecting in a sense of damage if he continues up with this? Thanks

I know lots of kids who slugged the dex back in the day, and they turned out fine. Olneys Lesions / "Holes in yo' head" turned out to be nothing to worry about after all with oral usage of DXM - unless your cousin was injecting DXM directly into his brain, most of the bad effects will come from the syrup carrier (and not the drug itself!)

The issue I think is becoming chemically dependent at such a young age. If he's drinking it every day there's a problem. (Ben was a guy on Intervention who did this.) DXM is a SNRI so it is somewhat physically addicting just by nature of its antidepressant effects, and it's definitely mentally addicting as a dissociative drug. Treat it like a youth popping Effexor (venlafaxine) to catch a buzz - albeit a fun one. It's certainly not everyone's choice of recreational activity, but drinking syrup is kind of a self-limiting situation, and if done in moderation it should result in nothing more than a day or so of cognitive impairment. Even high-dose trips that "feel" permanent are often greatly reduced in after-effects (as it were) a year later.

Of course the standard DXM boilerplate applies: Stay away from CCC's and other preparations with other active ingredients. Even Mucinex has a whole fuckload of guaifensin in it that can make you puke.

Lots of kids did this when I was 15 he will grow out of it and into pot and "real" phychedelics as he reaches driving age. Once a kid that age starts experimenting it generally has to just run its course not much you can do to stop him.

Certain people seem to like DXM a lot, but most kids only use it because they're curious or they have no access to better drugs. I personally used DXM at least 50 times times a teenager, starting at age 15, and while I may be a little odd, I managed to graduate from college and get into grad school :|

It seems IME that kids only do DXM because they can steal it/get it easy and cant get real psyches or ketamine...
it seems not many with access to other psyches/dissociative use DXM ever...
i would think DXM wouldnt be too hard on your brain long term so long as you're not taking CCC, but it certainly isn't in any way good for your brain.....
i never liked DXM, but just show him the intervention episode about DXM ben (a dude who did/does DXM every day for years) and i'd bet you'd scare him straight.

Between age of 16 and maybe up to 22 I took DXM possibly 100 times.

During periods of most frequent use I would say my memory, motivation, possibly other mental functions could have been slightly impaired. No noticeable long-term effects I can attribute to DXM. On the contrary I experienced plenty of negative consequences using MDMA/MDA, cocaine, amphetamines, and from tripping way too frequently.

Now I am nearly 29 and haven't tripped in a year and the only drugs I use now are methoxetamine (low antidepressant doses) and Piracetam (on occasion). Oh yeah, weed and alcohol ;)

Issues I have that I suspect wouldn't be as bad if I had not binged or overused a variety of substances: low motivation, some depression, poor finances, trouble concentrating, and a shitty memory.

But yeah, I wouldn't blame DXM at all for this. Much more likely and seemingly attributable to abusing speed/coke (especially a lot of speed), mdma/mda, and tripping too frequently.

NDMA antagonists like DXM don't seem to cause much long-term trouble. I abused the shit out of Ketamine for nearly 2 years and all I got from that was temporary schizoaffective disorder. Which went away after I stopped using it for a few weeks.

So yeah your cousin is fine but it's not a good habit for him to start taking heavy drugs at such a young age. Don't want to go down my path.

As mentioned the real concern is not from the toxicity of DXM formulations, but the development of a pattern of psychoactive drug abuse which may manifest itself later in life in a more insidious form.....
