Doing math using mental geometry

I am curious how people imagine math in their mind when they are doing mental equations or calculating simple numbers?

I have a 10x10x? grid that is coloured and use it 3 dimensionally to do small slightly inaccurate calculations. It's like my mental math note pad. It seemed easier to imagine an image and use it quickly vs numbers by rote.

It works well with metric.

Do other people do these things?

Some people are good at moving and manipulating 2D or 3D objects in their head and performing operations on them. I struggle with holding the images in my head.

For example, verifying the geometric magic squares in the image without using the pre-solved outer diamond is challenging for me. Was good at math in school, just don't visualize it that way cause the mental image isn't easy to manipulate for me. Would be a nice skill to have.
