Absolutely not. If you are stupid to begin with, and you do not bother to understand how weed can help you, then for you, it is simply going to amplify your bad habits. Roam around the site and take a look at how it really works.

So it amplifies stupidity?

So it amplifies stupidity?

I would say in a way it amplifies nearly everything to some degree. A movie you would already laugh at might be a little more funny. A good meal you enjoy might be a little more tasty. Sex might feel a little bit better. If you are naturally lazy it will amplify that as well. It is simply working with what already exists. For those of you who blame cannabis or any other doc on your personal problems: It is time to get real with yourself.

weed effects everyone differently and certain strains can cause a person to seem like their stupid, when really there just experiencing sporadic, super short term memory loss. marijuana only amplifies stupidity, when you a rookie smoker or your just stupid to begin with.

Does "getting real" with oneself change who we are for the better?

Weed just makes the rookies stupid?

Well I JUST saw a special on this a couple hours ago. There was a Dr from Yale said it lowers your owned by 8 points. Idk if that's even alot lol.

So according to Alex from Yale 8 points is nothing. They could be off by that much. So this guy was total bs. Figured, yahoo when I'm stoned(like right now) I definitely have short term memory loss & I'm definitely really clumsy. Thanks for the article.

i personally think weed makes you stupid. after 2 years of smoking everyday you start to feel really dull. your brain is shot, and you say the stupidest shit trust me it happend to me

There's been some (very early, they need more research) studies conducted at the University of Sasketchawan as well as Hebrew University. Which is considered to be a "mecca" of sorts for Cannabis research, it's where most of the molecules, including D-9 THC was discovered. It's also where they put forth the idea that the 49-ish cannbinoids and the 5-8-ish mirror-compounds are needed to gain the full effect vs, say "sativex."

So while it does have an affect on short-term and (possibly) long-term memory. One must take into account that most of the research done on that front was either done at NIDA (where they are required by law to report any findings as abusive. Dr. Donald Tashkin talks about that at great length if you youtube/google "Dr. Donald Tashkin NIDA" and use keywords like "can only report as abuse" or "can't report findings" or "can't report positive findings/research/results" etc.

I'll add any links and provide any citations on request inasmuch as I can (sending PMs to me would help)

Anyway here are a few links on this study that shows cannabis can promote brain cell growth

You can see some of the nuances between people who have an agenda (like me, I fully own it, I want this stuff to be true! Though as (at least I like to think of myself as one) a rationalist I'm open to whatever scientific findings are produced. Ironically cannabis is one of the most studied medicines in human history so the "it needs more study before we make it legal for recreational use" is silly and as for medicinal use, plenty of study can and should be done but we have more than enough for a non-biased FDA to put it through, except for those pesky lack-of-being-able-to-patent-it-and-make-trillions business :sus:

Anyway, this is one of many aspects of cannabis that gets shoved under the rug or research gets minimized, ignored, shut-down or just not given enough funding and manpower.

We should also keep in mind that neuroscience is still in its infancy and that everyone's physiology and mentality is different. But there are some things that happen to everyone. Example: Your CB1 and CB2 receptors in your brains and bowels will be activated, and there are some theories (though they don't have a formed consensus, some peer reviewing and falsifiable evidence though, which is why I don't say "hypothesis") that people who are naturally low on compounds/chemicals in their endocannbinoid system could be missing certain things or low on certain things and that cannabis helps get your endocannbinoid system in gear.

Fun fact: The endocannbinoid system is as important as any other system in the body, but it isn't universally taught or even known about in many medical schools! The reasons are political, mostly. It's the equivalent of discovering the central nervous system and finding a flower that helps balance the CNS out but instead of studying the CNS we ignore adding it to the curriculum and acknowledging it exists. Continue to base practices around it instead of in a symbiotic relationship with it, and we make the flower that potentially helps CNS-related issues illegal because it cannot be patented and that it makes latinos and black men go crazy and want to rape white women.

It really sounds quite mad when you paint it in a different light, doesn't it? %)

Just because it happened to you doesn't mean it's anything other than anecdotal evidence from one person. We don't know the average type of strain smoked, your physiology, mental and physical health, etc.

I've been smoking cannabis for a lot longer than two years and for me it helps calm my mind and it also helps me be more social, helps with my aspergers, empathy disorder, and (sexual molestation-based abuse and sexual torture at age nine, I even lost a testicle because of it) severe PTSD. I had my first real, healthy relationship at age 25-28 (right up until her death, cancer), and I was able to deal with what came after in part because of cannabis.

So to all that I say "To each their own"

It might be better to say "weed makes me, personally, stupid. Or at least it makes me feel that way," it's a less general statement and since there is very little scientific evidence one way or another and almost no study of the endocannbinoid system going on it's really hard to say if it makes you "stupid" or not.

I find it to be a rabbit-hole. For one, how do you even define intelligence? Some people do rather simplistically. "intelligence is being really good at math and other academia" Others might say there are different kinds of smart and different kinds of stupid, both good and bad. A brilliant athlete like Michael Jordon vs a brilliant physicist like Stephen Hawking. Both are the at the top in their fields, both have made history. One (Dr. Hawking) is putting forth and has put forth ideas and theories that could benefit the whole of mankind. The other could act as inspiration for other athletes. Rocky Marciano, only undefeated heavyweight in history and one of the most underrated fighters ever. Brilliant boxer? Maybe not so much, but a brilliant offensive/defensive fighter? Oh yes.
And brilliant in conditioning himself, one of the very best who ever lived in that arena.

And in sciences you got people who are brilliant horticulurists (cannabis farmers, for example) and people they might work with who may specialize in cross-species genetics. Who is more intelligent? It becomes rather philosophical at that point. A great sci-fi writer might make a poor scientist, as a final thought on that front.

Marijuana is illegal in the United States because it has no scientifically-valid and acceptable medical use and is an abused substance.

A published study of one synthetic cannabinoid showing brain growth does not mean cannabis promotes brain growth. More brain cells might be a good thing but I do not believe anyone has found such a connection to intelligence. I am very skeptical about all the information you have reported.

The first thing we must do before this question is answerable is to understand intelligence.

Isaac Asimov wrote both science and science-fiction. I believe polymaths represent true intelligence.

Excellent reading material right there

Drug experiences are profoundly influenced by personal expectations, which are shaped by culture. As the OP suggested, mainstream media has painted a pretty stereotypical image of a stupid pothead, which often ignores the intellectual and inspirational experiences going on inside the mind of a person strung out on a couch.

I wonder what experiences people might have with weed if our typical prototype of a stoner had been massaged by culture into something resembling Freud with his thoughtful pipe.

Anywho, I think that one of the big links between weed and stupidity is that both are considered "cool," and so many people who smoke weed as a way of being cool, or fitting in somewhere, also entertain a lifestyle that doesn't promote intelligent interaction or do much to make them smarter.

On that note, as other people have said, this whole discussion depends on how you understand intelligence. If you define intelligence as an ability to perceive/create novel patterns in phenomena, then weed can definitely help - and mainstream media, like popular TV sitcoms or movies, can definitely hinder. If, on the other hand, you define intelligence as an ability to successfully fit in with cultures, to be cool, then weed will probably hinder - and monotonous, uncreative, traditional, bullshit television shows and movies will probably help.

I seem to have lost my main point amongst the freewheelin' hyperbole: Most people I know who smoke weed wind up spending a lot of their time watching bad TV instead of enjoying the power of their mind - I think this does more to promote stupidity than controlled recreational use of the herb itself. In my opinion, whether or not someone smokes weed occasionally is such a small factor in a lifestyle that either moves toward intelligence or not.

As someone said above me, in this sense, weed can enhance patterns that are already there. Ruminators gonna ruminate!

There are plenty of films and TV shows that give the marijuana unique qualities: humor, intelligence, common sense, social acceptance.

In my personal experience it is used to alter overall perception into something more positive, largely to alleviate boredom. It is not much different from drinking.

It can be used as inspiration. It can get fairly annoying when people rely too much on it. It can lead to group acceptance, in the most ridiculous ways.

It will have different effects on different people, none of which I would guess are improved intelligence. It may not be entirely detrimental to all users but there is certainly something there that is a bit hard to name.

I am sure a stoned person is capable of ignoring personal responsibility far more readily than their sober counterpart, blocking out information.

Even a subtle long-term effect on the mind can be far more damaging than physical harm to your body. I would guess what results for some in the long-term is a flat affect.
