For example, last night I finished a whole bottle by myself. I was completely alone at home and decided to have one drink and that turned into the whole bottle. I don't drink everyday but when I do drink I just cant control myself. I will keep on drinking until all the booze is gone or until I am passed out drunk.

I'm not even a fun drunk. By being a drunken asshole I lost my last girlfriend of a year. I get real mean and will just smash on anyone who is around. I never get hands on but my mouth does run wild.

I don't feel like I need a drink but when it is around all I want is another drink.

Do you think I'm an alcoholic?

Only you can say you're an alcoholic. But the fact that you are asking other people if you are an alcoholic maybe suggests that you.

It doesn't matter if we think you are an alcoholic or not, and it depends on the definition of "alcoholic" anyways. What really matters is if you think your own use of alcohol is having a negative effect on your life, and if so how you think you can fix that. Many people choose to model their alcohol problem as a disease and say they suffer from alcohol addiction and are an alcoholic. There are then treatments that can be applied to help with the affliction of alcoholism.

This isn't really an appropriate topic for Other Drugs so I'm going to move it over to The Dark Side for you.

Well this sounds more like an addictive personality than alcholism (correct me if im wrong) i dont drink everyday either but also lke to consume alot of alchohol when im on a session. this does not make you an alchoholic!

If your feeling the need each day or every other day to consume alchol then you probably are delving into the realms of alcholism ?

Through from what you have said about your girlfriend leaving you and being an asshole to everyone around you, i would just leave the alcohol . There are many other mind altering drugs which will give you much more enjoyable experience and you might even come out of the experiecne with a life lesson learn't ?

Look-up dmt op, theres a drug which will really will take you down the rabbit hole and probably will make you a better person overall (well it helped 4 me) :)

I am well aware of DMT. I used to make it with a buddy when I was living in Chico. I'm now in Santa Cruz and can easily get my hands on any mind alter substances. I actually plan on eating some L and doing a little K tomorrow night. Its not that I haven't done my fair share of drugs. I never have problems with these drugs except maybe losing my mind from taking to much acid once in a while but to be honest I like getting on that level. I guess with any substance I take I will eat as much as possible. It is only the alcohol that seems to fuck with me. Thankfully all my friends here in Santa Cruz would rather eat some L then drink but I still end up drinking from time to time. My alcohol use has dropped to almost nil since I have come back here but I know all it takes is a trip back home or to Chico for me to lose my shit.

From your posts, just sounds like you have an addictive personality. If I were you I'd stay away from alcohol.
Ghb affects me almost like alcohol affects you If I do to much, I run my mouth to anyone trying to fight them, regardless of there size, And I'm a tiny motherfucker, but I've learned the key, which is
MODERATION

Nice to see another dmt enthusiast, I can relate in some sense, i have an addictive personality and anything enjoyable imo i will abuse in a way. why i spent good 9-10 hours on xbox while on speed last wekend (im new to this xbox thingy lol)

I cant advise abusing any mind-altering substances, but would'nt you rather have 6 hours of awe inspiring vision while tripping than bad mouth good friends and aquaintences in a drunken slur (sorry to say this, but you lost your gf thruogh alcohol! why bother getting into it when you know theres better things available?)

One of the issues I find with alcohol is that the fun euphoric properties aren't really that high. If drinking in the company of friends or out at a bar then there is lots of other excitement and fun in the air so the alcohol merely accentuates that and allows everyone to cut loose. When drinking alone or in a boring setting all of sudden you are relying on the booze to create the fun times and it might not do that very well making you drink a lot more trying to find that feeling.

Booze also inhibits your judgment so after one drink it is a lot easier to take another, and so on ad infinitum.

edit:
I like to drink to forget. Just like I do K to make me feel like I am living a different more enjoyable life.
Ah well using booze for it's mind numbing properties show deeper issues than alcoholism at work. It likely isn't helping the root of the issue though.

OP it sounds to me like you just need to not drink. If you're not dependant on alcohol then just stop drinking man. You obviously admit that it is contributing to problems in your home and personal life, and drinking an entire bottle of alcohol by yourself in an evening is not at all normal.

If I were you I would try to moderate at first because quitting drinking is very difficult, it runs in my family and I will attest from experience that several of my family members have fought a lifelong struggle with it. If you cannot moderate your drinking and realize that it is still causing you problems then just stop alltogether. Get whatever help you need and make it happen man.

A lot of good advice from amapola. "Alcoholism" doesn't have any diagnostic criteria. If you want to be clinical you can use the DSM criteria for alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse, although I think it is also unnecessary to use these labels.

Environment may be a big factor for you if you consumption decreases to almost nothing when you are not back home. Everybody has a different combination of factors behind their consumption. Some psychological factors may be more deeply rooted but environment can also be important.

You can ask yourself what the difference is when you are at your current location or when you go back home. Is it the people you are with, more anxiety, less accountability to others? That can help you figure out what purpose your alcohol consumption serves for you.

Go to a few AA speaker meetings and listen to the stories that alcoholics tell. Then it's up to you to identify with them or not.

^Sorry man but I've been thinking for quite a while that I know it all and that hasn't made it true.

"alcoholic" can be a silly word. ignoring it, i would say you have a problem with alcohol. it is not an uncommon one. i know lots of people that do not have any trouble going days without drinking, but when they do drink they just cannot stop. it is a problem.

you need to find your line, and not cross it. if the first drink puts you over the line, then you shouldn't drink.

like said above i dont think your actually an alcoholic but it seems like u may be on the track of becoming one so be careful ...once u get to the point to where u need to drink just to not be sick and to function thats when u are truly any alcoholic i would think thats my opinion anyway but you are in control of it man u just gotta be strong and take control of it

Agreed on both counts.

On the first, the word "alcoholic" used to describe a pathology of alcohol abuse is pretty much meaningless. If you want to follow the disease model of alcoholism, and identify as an alcoholic because it will help you reach your goals, then that's fine. But that's pretty much where the term begins and ends.

I can keep busy with a bottle of vodka in the freezer for several days, but the minute I get bored and crack that first glass, the bottle is gone within 12 hours. Then I wake up, feel like crap and might not drink again for several days. It really depends how I feel. Some people can take breakthrough amounts of alcohol to get over feeling like shit. I can't, so I pretty much have to let my body recover after drinking. This is likely the primary thing keeping my alcohol use under control, because I do enjoy being buzzed.

I think if you were to ask, most people would draw some sort of distinction between binge drinkers and alcoholics. The former seems to be more what I describe, while the latter has a physical dependence that requires them to drink on a daily basis. Again though, the term is highly subjective.

OP, try the MAST alcoholism test: http://counsellingresource.com/quizzes/alcohol-mast/index.html . It's supposed to identify alcoholics with over 90% accuracy... In the test you are asked questions about what consequences your drinking has caused.

I'm a problem drinker myself, and I feel I need at least a few beers almost every day. Once or twice a week I get heavily drunk, and often I loose control and drink way more than I intended. I got a score of 6 from the test.
