Does Nitrous Oxide cause brain damage?

im pretty sure Tetrafluoroethane and/or Difluoroethane are the 'active ingredient' in computer dusters...different altogether from halothane.

edit: well not completely different, Tetrafluoroethane and Halothane are the same except Halothane has a Br and a Cl in place of the hydrogens on Tetrafluoroethane.
 
^ Yeh. I was never planning on using it ever but was just curious about it :)
 
they have just made it illegal to sell whippets(for non comercial use) in nz. one of the reasons was some visiting researcher/anethnatist(sp?) who had looked into brain dammage caused by both medical and commercial grades of nos. this research has not yet been published or peer reviewed yet. but he still gave his fucking 2 cents. how the fuck can a government push through legislation on something that hasnt got any acceptance in the medical community.(soz i dont have what he said here)
 
They didn't make it illegal... they just re-read the law... and publisised that it has ALWAYS been illegal. Just like it's illegal to sell butane to people if they are gonna inhale it.
 
I'll just tell you what I have seen from my own personal experience. At Grateful Dead concerts my friends used to huff balloons of nitrous. I'd be lookin at my friend and I could swear his lips were turning blue!! At first I thought I was just trippin out, but then others started to mention it. Sure enough, he wasn't gettin enough oxygen and neither were the others. There were 4 of them all with blue tinged lips. Really freaked everyone out for awhile. Needless to say that was the end of that for the night :) The problem might have also been that they were doing it repeatedly over and over too. I really don't know but it is something I will never forget.
 
There is some evidence of a role for nitrous oxide in MDMA (and probably other amphetamine) neurotoxicity. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that mixing the two might increase the risk of harm.

Why do some people's lips turn blue when they do nitrous oxide? is a question on "Ask Erowid"
 
If nitrous caused brain damage, wouldn't you see commercials on TV from lawyers offering to help you sue your dentist?
 
What I want to know then is why there havent been any human studies proving that Olney's Lesions exist in primate/human brains from Ketamine/Nitrous Oxide use/abuse.

From what Ive read there seem to be no documented reported incidents of it being found in any human patient. Then again that would just be a sample of the possible data that exists untouched.
 
I thinnk i remember a paper i read about Olney's Lesions being caused by ketamine and nitrous oxide, in combination.
From what i remember nitrous oxide alone does not cause Olney's Lesions. Ill try and dig up a link

The nitrous was given for 3 hours.
 
As long as you get plenty of oxygen while using, Nitrous Oxide isn't very bad for your body compared to most drugs.

Surprising considering it feels like your brains in a blender 8(
