I know Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic antidepressant which is not an SSRI but is still consitered an antidepressant & u take it at night because it is sedating unlike SSRIs which are typically taken in the morning.

Does the effects of Mirtazepine (I dont mean at night when u take them, but rather during the day while taking it) feel similar to the SSRIs?

It's difficult to answer your question, as one doesn't "feel" antidepressants like recreational drugs.
Mirtazapine was a very effective antidepressant to me (as well as a great sedative), but some side effects made me stop it. Now I'm on escitalopram, which is quite effective too.

As far as SSRI's go I've had experience with citalopram (was on it for years) and effexor (6 months). Then I switched to Mirtazapine for 6 months. I've been off antidepressants for 3 months now.

In my experience, SSRI's had pretty bad side effects. I constantly felt like I was on "something", I had difficulty reaching orgasm, and cessation was a bitch.

Mirtazapine was totally different. I slept like a baby and felt generally great, never felt drugged up or "under the influence". Stopping the drug was a breeze.

Like I said I have now been anti-depressant free for over 3 months, although I am taking omega-3 supplements (fish oil, 1g / day). They seem to make a difference as when I forget them for a couple of days in a row I definitely notice a change in my general mood levels.

I understand that each person's personal brain chemistry is pretty much unique so best for you to find out for yourself. But in my books Mirtazapine totally owns SSRIs.

My dad was once prescribed mirtazapine for depression, but he had to stop taking it because it made him see colorful visuals like on a lsd/shroom trip. I think there's a thread somewhere about potential psychedelic effects of high-dose mirtazapine...
