Bill S-10 would set minimum penalties for drug offences including cultivating more than five marijuana plants

More than 500 doctors, scientists and academics are calling on the federal government to abandon a new crime law tabled in Parliament that would impose mandatory minimum prison sentences on people convicted of drug offences.

Bill S-10 would amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to set minimum penalties for drug offences committed by a criminal organization, involving violence or use of a weapon. It also sets out a minimum sentence of six months in prison for cultivating more than five marijuana plants and for drug-related crimes committed by a person with a previous drug offence.

An open letter to the leaders of Canada's federal political parties seeking an evidence-based approach to drug crime sentencing was spearheaded by the Vancouver-based Urban Health Research Initiative.

"There is no scientific evidence to support this approach in terms of it reducing crime or promoting public safety and there are also real health concerns given that incarceration has been associated with the transmission of infectious diseases such as HIV," said Thomas Kerr of the Urban Health Research Initiative.

. . .

"[The proposed law] won't have much impact on crime rates or drug use, other than you are going to have a lot more people in jail," said Boyd. "Arrest data suggest that we will have a doubling of the prison population in B.C. just to house marijuana offenders."

I swear to fuck it's getting worse by the day here. When are the canadian sheeple going to wake the fuck up and kick Harpers ass out off office? Probably when the fascist cunt dies but they say only the good die young so he'l be around for a few hundred years yet.

Canada has no right to rag on america because we are becoming more totaltarian then they are in regards to drug laws and many other things.

Dude I don't think you realize that the US, Canada, and the UK all have basically the same drug laws. And those are just the big 3 people, I would also group Australia and to some extent New Zealand into that list... If you even try to argue this isn't true then you have never been to any of these places..

Ive never been out of canada no but last time i checked we are our own country. Too bad few prime ministers have had the balls to stand up to the americans. Tell them to fuck off and if they don't like it well to bad hey. :\

I gotta move to the Czech Republic. Over there you're legally allowed to possess (among other street drugs) up to 1.5 grams of heroin for personal use.

Marijuana 15 grams or less
Heroin 1.5 grams or less
Cocaine 1 gram or less
Methamphetamine 2 grams or less
Amphetamine 2 grams or less
Ecstasy 4 tablets or less
Hashish 5 grams or less
Hallucinogenic mushrooms 40 pieces or less
LSD 5 tablets or less

Man, when's the next election? The Conservatives need to get out ASAP.

We need to get these guys out at all fucking costs but honestly i cannot see it happening in the next election or the one after. The canadian people aka sheeple are far too complacant to actually want to toss these bastards out of power and keep them out. Besides in quebec and also in my own home province (a rock in the ocean ;) ) there is not alot of hate for the federal conservatives.

It's a fucking sad state of affairs indeed these days in the not so great white north. Thankfully the north is not so white these days so if anyone can make it great again it would be the immigrant population that is coming into canada. We have sadly forgotten what oppression feels like (or atleast most of the country has) but they have not and are no doubt feeling it under the conservative goverment as well.

Perhaps we have to feel the full weight of oppression again before we toss these cunts and traitors out for good.

Me thinks ive been reading too much Lenin so i shall shut up now lol

Hallucinogenic mushrooms 40 pieces or less

What does that mean? Do they count out how many pieces are in the bag? Or is it 40 mushrooms? How do they count the powder that's usually at the bottom of bags?

I'm very curious about this now. I'm imagining cops sitting around arranging mushroom pieces trying to figure out if there were 41 or 38 mushrooms in a bag.

Weird law perhaps but I'll take their law(s) over ours any day.

I imagine sooner or later, over here drugs will become legalized, I just hope I'm still around when that happens.

I'm not an expert on American history but over the past few centuries, we've had other laws abolished in the same fashion (meaning with time) because someone or a group of individuals eventually had the balls to stand up for what's right. Black slavery comes to mind, as well as women not being able to vote.

I think the end of alcohol prohibition is a better comparison for the US. I think some drugs will be legalized within the next 10-20 years, and more after that.

Ok wild idea here but instead of everyone fucking off to prague why not actually try and change the oppressive drug laws? As much as i wanna visit prague (the drugs arent even my main reason for wanting to go there) why not try and fix our own mess instead of just escaping from the mess and possibly creating a mess in another country?
