I believe Cocaine is one of the most misunderstood drugs in history. Cocaine prescriptions are likely to be very successful in my opinion. I personally don't believe that Cocaine is inherently a dangerous drug.
What is not commonly recognized by its typical abusers is that it is a highly potent chemical. My own experiments have suggested that Cocaine (in the form of Coca Tea as was suggested above) is active orally as a mild-stimulant and anti-depressant at around 5mg (!) with a rather long duration of action. I still feel "good" (albeit subtly) 24 hours later off of such a small dosage. It's no wonder that cramming hundreds of milligrams of this stuff up one's nose is unhealthy and addictive.
Now realistically, a Cocaine maintainance center can not afford to give out multiple grams of Coke to patients on a weekly basis, nor is it realistic for them to provide "maintainance" multiple times per day. I suspect that the doctors that are arguing for prescription Cocaine may also recognize its effects when used in more reasonable dosages and via the oral or sublingual administration routes.
I think there were studies (wish I could cite them) in South America that found that Coca Chewing alleviated Cocaine cravings in former-addicts of crystal Cocaine and Pasta. The well-known nutritional "integrative medicine" guru Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. reports that he never witnessed any negative health effects arising from Coca use (both oral and sublingual) in the South American populations that he studied. He suggested that ideally, Coca chewing gum could be made available to the American public.
Some day I will write all about my lengthy experimentations involving the Coca and my own observations concerning its effects. I'm not sure I completely agree with Weil, in that I think Coca could be mildly unhealthy when used in a different cultural context, however, I have little doubt that the negative effects would be negligible when compared with more the concentrated forms. I personally consumed Cocaine (in the form of Coca) on a daily basis for a few months, stopped my consumption abruptly, and experienced absolutely no withdraw symptoms and no cravings. In fact, I actually felt better than when I started because I was in better physical condition from being more active in general. I think Coca could be a very effective treatment for depression as well as ADD/ADHD related problems. I'm not sure that it would be very helpful for weight-loss as I found that on the whole, it increased my appetite.
Always, all things in moderation, of course.
