French Doctor Says He Cured Himself of Addiction by Taking a Muscle Relaxer

Dec. 9th, 2008

A French doctor maintains he cured himself of alcoholism with a drug usually prescribed to stop muscle spasms, ABC News reported Tuesday.
Dr. Olivier Ameisen writes in his book 'La Dernier Verre' ('The Last Glass') that taking the drug baclofen erased his desire to consume alcohol. The book, a best-seller in France, is slated to be published in the U.S. next year under the title 'The End of My Addiction,' ABC said.

Ameisen, a cardiologist who formerly practiced at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center in New York, writes that he used to consume large quantities of both gin and whiskey.

He says that all changed after he began using baclofen, a muscle relaxant typically used to treat muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis. His inspiration was a 2000 New York Times article about a cocaine user who conquered his addiction after he began taking baclofen for a muscle problem, ABC said.

Some experts are optimistic that Ameisen's treatment could help other people stop drinking. But others say there is no single drug that can cure alcoholism.

good god some of the comments in that abc article are so typical of 12 steppers! 8) 8)

i know.. i know... not all AA members are like that but to see them get so defensive is very telling of their own insecurities.

Doesn't suprise me..

I looooved baclofen.. I was able to stop taking klonopin (4mg/day for years) and amphetamines suddenly without withdrawal from either - and feel great/energetic/anxiety free - but tolerance built up and then it was a bitch..

I think it also started making me sorta schizo after a while.
