Hi EADD, I'm hoping someone here could help me with this...

I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping atm due to quitting cannabis, after smoking it most days of the week continuasly for a period of 6 months or more i get WD's at night times (insomnia, cold sweats, hallucinations just as i feel im going to fall asleep... and anxiety)which seem to get worse every night that i stay sober.

I had this problem 3 years ago untill I explained it to my GP who then prescribed me with 20mg Temazepan nightly to begin with then every other night for a few weeks.

The temazepan workrd a treat and a few weeks later I was sleeping nicely with no aid at all!

However I got back into the habit again about a year ago and saw a doctor in the town I live in now 4 months ago except that time i got prescribed Zoplicone which did nothing for me apart from give me nightmares and a horrible taste!

I have an app today in two hours time, can anybody advise me of how to go about getting some better help than another zopliclone prescription?

Thanks in advance! :)

Out of interest, were you frank about the cause of your sleeping problems with your GP?

If you explain that zopiclone didn't work for you they might try you on zolpidem instead. I think that would be the best tack.

I'd just be honest again and specifically ask for (a small amount of) temazepam. Stress that it is for short-term use, if needed.

You'll want a sleeping med that lasts a bit longer than zolpiclone/zolpidem, cos you'll want to stay asleep and not be woken by yr dreams --> Oxa, broma, tema, flunitrazepam, would be ideal medium-length benzos.

I guess I would just never ask a doc for a benzo by name as I fear getting drug seeker written in my file. I still think it's risky but depends on your relationship with the doc. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious.

Zolpidem still has a short half-life like zopiclone but doesn't have the taste side effect. I understand that it's about twice as expensive as zopiclone to the NHS which means that it's less frequently prescribed. If zopiclone literally has no effect on you they may well not give you zolpidem because I think they work in the same way.

Thanks lurchin...I was thinking the same although I agree with jancrow on the drug seeker point. Jancrow as you said he might not prescribe another z drug if i explain zopiclone does nothing. Do you know what he is likely to do in that case? Cheers

I'd just say that you were prescribed something a few years ago which did help. If they have your notes which they should then they'll identify it. No idea what they'll do, I'd be interested to see what they do so let us know.

will be very interested to see how this goes....

I have a long documented (nearly 20 years and i'm not 30) problem with insomnia. when complaining that zopiclone/zolpidem, which do get me to sleep, don't keep me asleep, I was offered diazepam instead. have the same problem with weed, but the docs agreed that its better for me than sleeping pills so only get scripted them when travelling.

if zopiclone gave you nightmares, surely it got you to sleep....?

also v surprised you were scripted temaz nightly, then every other night, for weeks. it only takes a few days of no weed to be able to sleep again roughly ok and weeks of temaz will cause way more insomnia long term. I dunno, a lot of this sounds a bit iffy to me, either a pretty irresponsible gp or....

edit. sorry, none of this ramble helps your situation. I doubt you'll get scripted temaz and my non professional opinion is you should man up and tough out a few hard nights, totally wish i'd done that rather than face months of insomnia due to stupidity with benzos.

Dunno, it's not exactly unheard of to get a single strip of a benzo in case of exceptional insomnia.

I agree that "few weeks" sounds kinda long.

Prescribing whole boxes of benzos or long-term repeats, that would be a bit iffy or irresponsible.

You're probably fucked for getting decent benzos, but I reckon you'd have a much higher chance if you stroll in and say "I was prescribed this stuff before that worked pretty well, can't remember the name of it, something like marzipan???" rather than "That temazepam I had before was great, I'll have more of that, quick style my man!"

I was thinking actually PTCH - Seeing as it's on his medical records, and it will be noted that it worked fine and there was no addiction signs, he could be prescribed Temaz again.
I'm surprised he got 20mg straight off to be honest!

Prescription of ten x 5mg zolpidem...PTCH I did exactly that, doc said "probably temazepan" but didnt want to give me any untill he recieves my notes (recently moved).

Ill see if these help../doc said should work better than zopiclone with less side effects?

Anyways cheers for ur help guys :) (y)

They can be a bit trippy for some people - So they're best taken straight away before you go to sleep for them to work with less side effects.
Good luck!

By the sounds of it he'd be willing to hook you up with it again then.

Monsta - I think it's likely, as he's had it before, which is weird right enough. "I would never ever prescribe you this medicine that will help you... oh wait - you've had it before, ah well, here you go" lol. GPs are strange when it comes to benzos. Not a fucking hope in hell would I ever get a benzo prescribed, even though I have nothing resembling "DRUG SEEKER" on my record, but if I'd had the misfortune of a lengthy heroin habit...

Whenever I've quit smoking weed I've just bought sominex from boots, they contain 25mg of promethazine. A couple of them gets you off to sleep no problems

Yes, a very decent sleeping aid, promethazine. Does turn out grog-inducing once in a while but mostly has me waking up refreshed %)

They are a strange class of alien being, aren't they? :D
And yes, if you'd had the misfortune of having a Heroin or Ethanol addiction, then they probably would think about prescribing you some form of Benzo - Though again, it would depend on the GP you'd see!!! 8(
There's never any certainty of what treatment to expect. And even then there's the list of pros and cons:
  • Your Gender
  • Your Age
  • The way you look
  • The way you speak / words you use
  • Where you live
  • Your past medical history
  • Your past prescribed medicines
  • You ethnicity
  • Even your fucking accent!
It's utterly Red-Ick-Yoo-Larse!

Promethazine definitely works well to knock you out, it's likely the most effective, certain and powerful OTC sleep-aid out there.
But lurching has a good point:

If you take it too late in the night then you're either going to wake up with a head full of Lead wrapped in cotton wool and be monged out for 4 hours or wake up late with your alarm having been going on for about 20mins and still feel like your head is full of Lead wrapped in cotton wool.
So you need to take it really early, probably 2 hours before you plan on going to sleep.

Oh! And ask for Phenergan as you will get more tabs for yer monies and you can get 50mg tablets ;)

Double Oh! - If you've had an Antipsychotic and have had right nasty symptoms from them, then choose Diphenhydramine instead.
