Do You Wear a Watch?

In a world of ubiquitous, reliable, small cell phones, the wristwatch is obsolete from a practical standpoint. It lives on only as a piece of jewelry, as fashion. And other than my wedding ring, I wear no jewelry at all.

Can you check the time on your phone as quickly as on your wrist?

Is your phone as durable (water proof) as a watch?

Also power requirements can make having a timepiece highly practical.

I had this Seiko ( means mini ), first Japenese wristwatch. I bought it because it is Titanium. It had rough edges and felt very light, I didnt like it because of those two factors. I crashed on my bike and it broke. $150's, so I dont think seiko carries replacement glass. Titanium has tolerances when in comparison with other materials like aluminum and chromoly equals higher performance. I liked the Chrongraph function, fun to time and reset, watch it spin.

I like G-Shock. Hows that argument go when a Japenese G-Shock wearer meets a Target bought G-Shock?
I had a American G-Shock, and I had had 2 strokes and other major health complications, and the inbreed in Fulton NY decided to sleepwalk me and my G-Shock melted in the microwave.

I want the Tissot electronic w/ the Altimeter, but I ride my bike so much, I bought a Altimiter for it instead. Kinda a gimmick because where i live is so flat. Would be interesting during a Hurricane though. I am excited about the hurricane threats this year

There are "Replica" watches of major brands, that have swiss and japenese high standard movements. Wuld be interested in one of those for my next watch. I would just do my homework first before buying.

Plastic Casio analogue. I live in Scotland where it's too rainy to constantly take your phone out to check the time.

hell yeah! I wear a Casio pathfinder PAW1500, its fucking amazing. tells me where i'm at, how hot/cold it is,the altitude, barometric pressure, tide & barometric graphs, moon phases, compass, much more! and it's solar powered and shock/water resistant. fucking best watch ever.

I wear a 30 euro sekonda watch that needs replacing every year.
I am on my third one now.

My watches are definitely an accessory more than a practical piece.

I switch between these two based on what I'm wearing/doing that day. The first one was a gift from my bf and the second I got some time before the age of six. Its surprisingly cute considering the whole Disney thing.

I want a more everyday piece though.

I wear a stainless steel Citizen Ecodrive. I want to upgrade to a diamond ecodrive as I scratched the shit out of the face when I fell trail running. I now wear a Garmin Forerunner 610 while running.

Was watchless for a long time but then I got a really nice tag for my 40th birthday, so now I do occasionally wear one, and as I am trying to move towards being without a phone, I will be wearing one more and more often.

I really do dig the precision engineering of watches, and I can see myself getting more and more into them.

I like Casio G shocks too, always have.

Finally bought one cheap online a couple of years ago. I can't say would recommend buying them online unless you know that Casio will honour the warranty on them, but it was half the price so worth the risk.

It's a Gulfman 9100.

i also use my watch to manage my time at work where i can't be just whipping out my phone all the time.

I really want one of these

That's pretty cool. It's so analogically complex. It reminds me of Charles Babbage's Difference Engine (built in 2002 from plans fully formulated in 1822 that could not be realized because of the technological limitations of the era).

I agree with your pragmatic judgment. I love complex analogical devices, though. Looking at them is a kind tech-porn for me (really it's just awe at the intelligence their invention implies). I assume a similar fetish affects people really into the type of watch junglejuice links to above. Otherwise, yeah, it's mostly a fashion accessory. You can't see the time as quickly with a phone as with a watch, but the difference is mere seconds and I can't imagine why anybody would need to check the time so often. Most cellphones have stopwatch functions if we need to be alerted to exact times.

I only wear it because it was given to me as a gift. Personally, it's very uncomfortable to wear, because the back of the straps has these ridges that bend inwards and are always digging into my wrist. I've noticed I'm in the minority when it comes to wearing a watch in my town. Everyone has a phone now, so I guess they're too good to wear a watch.

I recently bought a watch because they require us to have one for my program I'm in at school. This is what I got:

I actually enjoy it very much. I thought the clunkiness of a wrist watch would bother me at first, but it grew on me :)
