Do you think weed is a 'gate-way' drug?

I believe the first drug you take is sort of a gateway into a different world. I had gotten drunk on a few occassions in my teenage years, but I don't consider alcohol a gateway to other drugs for myself personally. It was after rolling for the first time ever that all of the crap I learned from D.A.R.E. and having "graduated" from the mandatory program, I found was all biased misinformation meant to scare kids away from the evils of drugs. I remember during the car ride to my friend's where I was going to roll for the first time telling my ex that I was a nervous. I wondered if I was going to be that "statistic" that dropped dead from ingesting a pill. Misinformation ftl. Well, I dropped and had an amazing night; needless to say, I survived and have had many other great rolls since then...As well as smoking pot for the first time, trying meth once (I loved it so much, I well never touch it again.), downing a bottle of Robitussin (DXM in it only.), trying Morning Glory seeds, popping Vicodin/Oxy/Xanax, LSD, and Shrooms.

I feel my personality had a lot to do with it. I'm very much the kind to say fuck it. I like to have a good time. I like to experiment. I would never in a million year have tried meth when I had first started rolling. I was afraid of LSD and Shrooms up until over a year ago. Now it's added to the list of things I've tried.

These are just my 2 cents. More often than not, doing the drug puts you in front of that gateway, and it's up to you and your personality to decide whether or not you're going to walk through it.

yes, dont forget nicotine is also a drug. that is much more of an opener to other drugs than weed. many of you are contradicting yourself by saying its not a gateway drug, than talking about how it is a gateway drug...

Smoking weed is unlike nicotine and or alcohol in the fact that it seems to opens one mind rather then limit it, so I guess yes weed does make some people more prone to trying other psychoactive drugs. Then again the people who were prone to try different drugs most likely would have experimented with other drugs even if there was no such thing as weed. I feel like this question will never really have a clear cut answer.

100% a gateway drug.

You get curious about drugs, see and hear about everybody smoking weed and decide to try it since its the most widespread, mild, and socially acceptable drug, and then you smoke out.

Once youve gotten stoned youve crossed that line of altering your consciousness which makes dabbling in other substances MUCH less of a big deal.

Its kind of like getting a tattoo. At first youll be nervous and not sure about the whole thing, and then once you get that first one its not really a big deal anymore.

Also stuckinaloop has made the same points i was thinking as i read through this thread, in regards to other peoples posts that dont make sense. Like ecstasy being the gateway drug because when you were smoking weed you never tried anything else until E....

Hm.. It can or can't be a gateway drug it just depends on the user. When I first became interested in drugs, I was interested in DRUGS. Not just weed. Cannabis was cheap and relatively easy to find (if not offered frequently) so of course it was the first drug I tried. I didn't want to smoke weed, I just wanted a new perspective. That make sense? Though, I can see where people may get tired of smoking and move on to heavier substances. However, one must keep in mind the motive in 'getting high' and how it differentiates between whether or not it is helpful or harmful to the person as well.

Anyway, I think the answer here is just a big grey area.

Not really. I can see finding other drugs through marijuana but I don't think it is THE gateway drug like a lot of people try to say. THE gateway drugs are alcohol and nicotine.

I decided long before I started smoking weed I wanted to do acid, shrooms, ecstasy, etc. I do think that weed opens up peoples mind to trying more drugs, but I think this mainly depends on the personality of the user. For example, I know a friend who won't touch anything BUT weed. So it really depends on who you are.

Weed is a gateway to get off other drugs. Especially crappy drugs like tobacco. I wonder how many people kicked cigarettes after starting weed.

Weed is a gateway to relief.

Gotta say, Huaca, that I have quit tobacco on a couple of occassions by weaning myself away using weed. I held fairly mentally demanding jobs and realized I couldn't function properly simply toking up each time I wanted a dhurry and so waited till I got home. It had the two-fold benefit of helping me quit tobacco (for 2 years once) and dropping my tolerance to weed so I got whacked whenever I smoked up. A combo of weak will and caving in to weed+tobacco mix for a short time set me back on both occassions :(.

I think the only compelling argument for weed being more of a gateway drug than alcohol is that weed is illegal, thus when someone starts smoking weed they break the aversion that we all have(i think thats a fair assumption) against breaking the law. If pot was legal, then a person could smoke it and still maintain the feeling that doing illegal drugs is different and "bad" (not nec. saying that doing illegal drugs IS bad)

if weed is gateway drug so is tobacco and booze

first ciggy 11, first time drunk 13, first time stoned 13 but after booze. so if it wasnt for tobacco or booze i'd prob still be sipping tea n holding my breath.

Maybe if it's the first mind-altering substance used by a person, but it usually is not. That honor almost always goes to caffeine, alcohol or nicotine. And sometimes prescription stimulants/opiates/depressants.

Meanwhile, research is starting to find that kids prescribed ADHD meds like Ritalin and Adderall have a much higher risk of substance abuse, depression and anxiety as adults EVEN AFTER QUITTING THE DRUGS. Where are the "gateway" propagandists on that one?

Well, my first drug was caffeine, then it was alcohol, then tobacco, then marijuana, salvia, LSD, cocaine (once), and mushrooms. People will say, "well, smoking weed was ur gateway into acid lol" but that's BS. Ever since I read about LSD and mushrooms in health class, I'd wanted to try them, only after I graduated high school and had some independence.

If anything was the gateway it was caffeine.

Weed was a disappointment for me when I first tried it to be honest and made me want to try other drugs to see if they were up to my high expectations.

Only IV hydromorphone, Oxycontin, and opium met those expectations.

In the end, I wouldn't say weed is a gateway drug. Bluelight/Erowid has caused more harm in my life.

Weed is only considered a gateway to other, harder substances because it is lumped in with them by the laws in the United States. Christs'sakes, even cocaine is a schedule lower than it.

yea as a lotta ppl said, alcohol definitely was my gateway. as soon as i got drunk the first time i thought, "shit whats weed like!?"

then i fell in love....

tried coke a few times (thought it was useless) and just stuck with weed for another like 5 years till i found pills.

but definitely alco open the door to weed, and iw as more than happy with that for a while. now i dont do anything besides it cuz there aint no pills!
