if you find benzos recreational on their own, do you ever 'crave' them the same way you might whatever other 'drugs of abuse' happen to float your boat?
I'll post what I put in another thread:
For me, "There's something really off about benzodiazepines as an addictive substance ... even though I am physically and psychologically dependent on them. I have very little self control when it comes to substances I enjoy - I get cravings for say, cocaine, amphetamines, mdma, opioids... but I have never gotten a 'craving' for a benzodiazepine. Even if I am in benzo withdrawal, the feeling is "I need this as a diabetic would need insulin" , which is a radically different feeling from "I have an intense, overwhelming desire to do some speed or nod with some dilaudid." Does this make sense to anyone, or does anyone relate?"
extra info, for those not in a hurry
I guess what I am trying to say is that when it comes to other 'drugs of abuse,' dopamine is clearly involved and seems to tease us into wanting to repeat pleasurable experiences. benzodiazepines are unique in that it is not clear whether benzos increase or decrease dopamine... sure xanax sorta feels good, but I have no problem taking my benzos as prescribed, whereas a 2 month supply of something as shitty as ritalin or tylenol 3 would be gone in days, because my drug addicted, dopamine dysfunctional brain would like them to do them despite the little reward involved.
i think it would give me insight to hear from others as to whether or not benzos are unique in their abuse potential in comparison to other 'addictive substances.' Going by my own experiences, I'd hypothesize benzos might be abused solely to alleviate legitimate anxiety (stim comedowns, general anxiety, not being able to sleep, wanting to numb out through any means to escape a dysphoric state, etc). But obviously not everyone reacts to substances the same way I do, so I'd like to hear from you guys
