To be clear, this is not inconsistent with thinking there are 'soul mates.' The view of 'soul mates' is not imo that only one person can make you happy...but rather that there is one person out there that has a connection with you that transcends the normal connections people can create with each other (which is built up over time through a regular relationship).Damien said:No. I think that you can happily spend the rest of your life with one of many different people.

So how do you know if/when you have found your soulmate and how come this cannot be cultivated with more than one person?samadhi_smiles said:To be clear, this is not inconsistent with thinking there are 'soul mates.' knowing if/when/how you've found your soulmate is a different question whether there are actually soulmates or not.Damien said:So how do you know if/when you have found your soulmate and how come this cannot be cultivated with more than one person?
A very special friend (who also happens to be a BLer) told me that he thinks there are certain people that are locked in cosmic embrace together. I like this and I think it maps onto the soul mate discussion well.bromance said:I've never heard soul mates defined as that, and I like that. I was wondering if there was a more broad or encompassing definition that people meant when they use the term.
I had always found the term difficult to grasp, just based on the fact that there are 6 billion people, chances are my soul mate doesn't speak English, let alone live in the United States, or have remotely the same socio-economic status as I do. I think the way you defined it really allows for some leeway.![]()
I agree, but I don't think they are irrelevant questions.samadhi_smiles said:knowing if/when/how you've found your soulmate is a different question whether there are actually soulmates or not.
The former is an epistemic question based on what we can know the latter is a metaphysical question based on what there is actually existing.

That is exactly what popped into my head when I read the thread title.Damien said:No. I think that you can happily spend the rest of your life with one of many different people.
yes, very well said I think.trancegirle said:Yes, but i don't believe that just because you are soul mates it means you will be together in the physical forever.
