Do people use specific drugs because specific neurotransmitters are out of whack?

I got the idea because I had heard a theory that when your body craves certain foods it is because your body is subconsciously telling you that you are deficient of certain nutrients. For instance, if you crave a t-bone steak then maybe it is because you are deficient of iron or protein and your body is trying to get more iron or protein by making you crave the steak. I figured if that was possible, it may be the same with drugs. I feel normal when I drink. Otherwise I am nervous, anxious and non social. I have a hunch that it is because my body doesn't produce enough GABA or use it correctly.
