i seem to have an ear infection, after getting a cold (a long fucking one). we have leftover cephalexin (antibiotic, works for respiratory and sinus tract infections) but i don't like the side effects, or the idea of taking it for 10 days straight

if i don't take antibiotics, what will happen? will it just last longer? could the sinus infection get worse?

would i be able to go to school once the cold and infection symptoms subside or would i still be contagious and the symptoms are merely being suppressed by cephalexin?

Go to the doctor and get the correct prescription...take the whole thing as prescribed because otherwise you could risk the infection becoming more resistant. I've just finished a course, myself. You should start to feel better before the course is done but it's very important to finish it.

Taking antibiotics as prescribed helps prevent antibiotic resistant infections. Most physicians prescribe antibiotics less than they used to. My view is to take it all as prescribed or not at all because doing antibiotics halfway can be worse than not having done them at all.

Yes the sinus infection could get worse. Sinus infections are not all that contagious, if your doc didn't tell you to avoid people you are probably OK. An exception would be people who are immunocompromised from chemotherapy or something like that who wouldn't be on a campus anyways.

this!

haven't gone to a doc, i just have all the same symptoms as my sister (caught it from her). her doc put her on an antibiotic course. apparently though, she's had this thing for a fucking month even with the antibiotics

i'm already fatigued in PAWs, not looking forward to antibiotic fatigue added to it

I am currently taking this same antibiotic for a skin-abscess and it is helping TREMENDOUSLY. No serious side effects noted except maybe for mild fatigue.

qwe-- which means that she's either not taking it correctly, or it's a resistant strain. It sucks, but if you get antibiotics for something like that, take it all as directed, and be happy for it. As strains get more and more resistant, antibiotics will eventually lose their efficacy. Shame, that.

... unless you've already started taking the antibiotics. In which case, you can take them both, but don't stop taking the antibiotics until the series is done.

Oregano oil can work well sometimes, but I find that it's a bit hit-and-miss.

Actually Cephalexin is natural or at most semi-synthetic (if that's what's worrying you). I forget what bacteria makes it, but I am almost certain that the chemical is of natural origin, like Penicillin.

hey Jam I mean natural in the sense that the drug has a whole foods source found in our normal diet (ie oregano). Now obviously the oil has been extracted through distillation but its close to a whole food.

Yeah it's important to do the entire course once you started it. So many people make this mistake and it drives me crazy. Antibiotic resistance anyone? :p

Oregano oil is amazing stuff. I've never had an antibiotic that worked so good for so many things. But just like with anything, different antibiotics work best for different things. YMMV.

Go to your doctor, get the right antibiotics, take a pro biotic during and after the course, problem solved.

I had a sinus infection for 4 months straight. Did 3 times of antibiotics all the way through (dr prescribed), they did nothing but make me feel like shit the whole time..
I started eating raw cloves of garlic (chop em up, roll em in some bread or whatever), 2 cloves a day. I felt a LOT better after 3 days and by the next week that 4 month long sinus infection was gone.
I'm sure I smelled like garlic for a while. But it was the only thing that worked for me.
