Do drugs do more Harm or Good to culture?

so I think it depends on the situation whether drugs will help or harm. overall in the history of drugs sadly I think they've done more harm to people than good. the good is very good, but the bad is very, very bad.

I think, while true that drugs have the potential to cause great harm, that such is actualy quite rare. Only a small percentage actually "abuses" drugs or uses them uncontrollably, while a very large percentage uses drugs reponsibly, especially when you factor in all use of rx drugs, caffene, alchohol, etc.

I'd have to disagree^ I think MOST people abuse drugs until they either develop a problem, or until they come to the realization that drugs deserve respect. Keep in mind I said MOST. There are the exceptions.

I guess it would depend on what you consider a problem. Someone who cannot go without coffee in the morning would be addicted, as does nearly everyone who smokes tobacco. Someone who is depressed if they stop taking prozac for more than 3 days or cannot sleep at night without a valium or 2 could be said to have a problem too. But then, of course, drugs would be a solution to their problem. If someone has a pinched nerve or other chronic problem and relys on an opiate to not be in constant pain, over time they would be most definitly addicted, if they stoped taking it, then they would experience withdrawls, but the first time they run out between refills may teach them that respect, and as such they could (if they're smart) not overuse them, learn to stretch their doses and use other drugs like ibuprophen on occasion to reduce their dependance.

I consider anything done in excess a problem. Moderation is key to all drug use. If you're abusing any drug from caffeine to crack you have a problem.

I would say that caffeine and nicotine have a very harmful affect on our culture. As does any drug because any drug has the potential for abuse. But what drugs would you consider the most harmful regardless of how they are used? Mine would be, Heroin, Meth, Crack, and PCP. The only positive application for a drug in this category would be SHORT term heroin use for relief of pain, but even then...once you try it statistics say that you have a high risk of becoming addicted because it's just so damn good!

Also, if a drug is used properly i believe MDMA, and LSD have the most potential for causing a positive impact. But, rememeber! Moderation is key to drug use in any culture.

Drugs create sub-cultures that impact already established cultures in a positive and negative way. Be it negative or postive its a good thing because it helps culture evolve.

^^ Yes, it is a rediculus statement. Burger King doesn't actually kill people. It will however, make you fat, and being fat is far unhealthier than using drugs.

If you shot up as often as you pigged out on BK, the H would get you first. (True, if you both A)You were smart and careful and B) it where legal that may not be the case)

An excellent book on caffeine's impact on world culture and history.

key word there is culture. the culture that forms around anything will eventualy degrade society as the members of that culture move further from the actual ideas that sparked them, more people become sheep and become apethetic and just sort of fit the steriotype, taking with them whatever good or bad they have learned. if a large part of the people forget the good and keep the negatives then it will sway that way. its like that will every culture because its like that with people. there is no group, just a bunch of individuals, no two the same. so take those individuals and put them in any culture and im sure they would interact with their environments with a similar mannor. introduce drugs into the mix and you have an individual interacting and doing things in ways they wouldnt have thought of before. that could be good or bad depending on the person. if you got alot of shitty people in the culture then it will turn to shit.

so right now the problem is legiality. if it remains illigal you have just drawn in a bunch of individuals who would all do illigal things, youve also turned them into opertunistic paranoid people because of the nature of the laws. if it were legal an entirely diferent group may be doing it. the culture around the drugs would change. the drugs are constant. culture is changing.

^^ And as illegal drug use increases and becomes more accepted, society in general begins to distrust and disdain the government, which continues to seek to surpress the culture that make up that society. As a result these cutures increase their illegal activities, not all of which are necessarily drug related. In response to this, the government increases its enforcement measures. It is a vicious downward spiral with only 2 possible ends: a strict, authoritrian governnment devoid of all personal rights and civil liberties, or the complete and utter chaos of anarchy.
