I'm not talking about "gaba" or "gaba-a" I know they both do. But I keep reading that they actually hit different subunits. Benzos a1 - a4 and alcohol a5 and a6. Is this true? I want to stop drinking but do I need to updose for a couple of days or is my 25mg librium 3 times a day fine to hold on? Unbelievable to me that you google and the medical establishment has no definitive answer. Tx.

Sorry not hostile at all. Actually pretty at peace. I'm frustrated with the medical profession that's all. Tx.

Alcohol exhibits a large proportion of it's effect on GABA-B, hence why baclofen, a GABA-B agonist is the optimal treatment for alcohol withdrawal. This is also the reason why heavy alcoholics are at times completely immune to the effect of benzodiazepines.

I think tricomb was referring to how you said, "Unbelievable to me that you google and the medical establishment has no definitive answer." Please don't criticize us and say we don't know before you even give us the chance to reply :)

I think the reason you are having trouble finding out precisely which receptor subtypes each binds to is that there are a LOT of receptor subtypes and not all of them have even been tested. Check out this mind-boggling article for example: GABAA receptors and alcohol

Anyway, Librium should at least be able to greatly reduce most alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It is unclear to me if you are saying that's the librium dose you already take in addition to drinking alcohol? If you normally take that much Librium and then drink a lot of alcohol on top of that then your usual dose of Librium is not likely to be effective for alleviating alcohol withdrawal.
