DMT and the Primitive Man

I came across an interesting cognitive science theory of the development of human consciousness. Also, see this.

The theory basically states that the modern man's consciousness is a product of culture and society. The primitive man was aparently not self-aware in the way that we are. They heard voices, which they interpreted as 'gods', which told them what to do and advised them in extreme situations. This potentially explains why ancient civilizations were typically polytheistic - each 'god' was a voice in someone's head.

I think that DMT could throw us into the state of consciousness described above. The DMT aliens/elves (which are experienced as external voices) are the 'gods' that the primitive man listened to. They are the voices that schizophrenics hear. This would also hint at why the DMT experience feels so natural - because a few thousand years ago it was the state that every man lived in.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

I hadn't thought about primitive man, but that is pretty much my theory with schizophrenics... I really want to do a study on levels of DMT and schizophrenia and find a drug that would selectively block DMT, possibly curing schizophrenia...

I think it's been proven that schizophrenics have much higher concentrations of DMT in their urine.. but I cba to find the study.

The really interesting implication of this is that schizophrenics are not actually crazy - they could just be the same as our ancestors.

I think that DMT could put you in such a state, but my own experiences with DMT have always contained an observational mind - self awareness + sums it up for me.

Even so, it's interesting that the aliens/elves are percieved to be external when, logically at least, they could only come from the mind. Perhaps we retain self-awareness since, being products of modern society, it has become our default state.

That's an interesting theory, but I don't think it's the whole truth. Schizophrenic voices, from what I can tell from the schizophrenics I've talked to, seem to be nothing like the voices/entities you hear on DMT. The entities on a DMT trip seem to communicate and interact with me. Schizophrenic voices seem to be just that, voices coming from "somewhere" which you can't talk back to, or have conversations with.

when, logically at least, they could only come from the mind.

Logic has little to do with the DMT world... Rules of the mundane world don't seem to apply at hyperspace.

I am among a select few who have never experienced elves or aliens. Personally I tend toward the idea that they are manifested by the mind & the commonality of the experience is because our cultural/gentioc makeup is extremely similar.

^ I recall reading something similar but I think the results were from a small study and not conclusive by any means.

I believe you are right, but I would love to see a larger study done... if it is simply DMT-related psychosis, I can see a "cure" coming pretty easily. :)

Another interesting point is that people tend to black out on high doses of psychedelics and dissociatives - in other words, a loss of self-awareness. They also have difficulty recalling the experience. Feral children also experience these symptoms and, those who are captured, have a huge resistance to learning language.

If schizophrenia is DMT-related psychosis, then simply consuming an MAOI would significantly worsen symptoms, would it not?

That is a very intersting theory. I havn't done dmt yet, and was wondering if dread and b9 have a major difference in setting or mindset when going into the trip that would cause dread to talk to entities and b9 to not?

Far from proven. Since the transmethylation hypothesis of schizophrenia was proposed in the 1960s, which was based a few flawed studies, nearly all follow-up research that has been conducted has found no statistical difference.

On another note, regarding endogenous psychotogens, there are confirmed case reports of females with ovarian tumors that produced anti-NMDA receptor antibodies, often resulting in the initial misclassification of the illness as catatonic schizophrenia.

Now that is interesting.

Me too B. But I think if you've read a lot about seeing aliens on DMT and you let your imagination run away with itself it's easy to conjure them up when your eyes are closed.

Guess I'm not the only one who doesn't get elves & aliens! I've had vague feelings of the presence of some sort of wise and all-knowing entity, but never to the point that I'd describe it as seeing elves or aliens.

I think a large part of the elves thing is people have read mckenna and are doing their best to look for it.
