  • Police raid house at 3am following apparent party
  • Students believed to have taken 2CB, which is similar to ecstasy
  • Officers now warning young people to beware the dangers of illegal drugs - especially those bought over the internet

A student was fighting for his life tonight after overdosing on illegal hallucinogenic drugs bought on the internet. Police said he was taken to hospital with five others early today having taken 2CB, which is similar to ecstasy. The group of students, some from Newcastle University, were found at 3am when police raided a house in Jesmond, a suburb of Newcastle. The six men – aged between 19 and 22 – are at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, with the most seriously affected student described as ‘critical but stable’. Some eight people were at the house when officers arrived and neighbours said they heard revellers coming and going into the early hours. It appears there may have been a party at the terraced house in Ripon Gardens, a street popular with students at the elite university. Bev Faulder, a teaching assistant, said: ‘I heard them running around, shouting and carrying on. We’ve had a lot of trouble with noise at night but they are a lovely bunch of lads when you see them during the day and I hope they’re all right.’

not sure where those kids are from but i thought 2c-b was long illegal in the UK? it's been illegal here before i ever started using drugs, while the other 2c-xs remain legal. My bet is that they got 25b-nbome or something like that. 2c-b has been used for many years now without much of an issue. Either that or they ended up taking some other random chemical.

I thought all the 2C-x type drugs were classified in 1997, or there abouts in the UK just in case anyone liked any of them. No, really, they were literally banned "just in case"! In more enlightened times I hope that most of the classification of 100s of substances over the years can be over-turned simply because there was no due process used at all when they were classified and they were just banned on a whim.

If they got it from the Internet then they probably ordered it from Silk Road or similar.

2-CB has a steep dose/response curve. Two pills instead of one of 2-CB is not like two pills of MDMA compared to one.

What is to make people believe that your average RC supplier didn't sell this?

I know of RC companies still shipping MXE to US and UK. I have personally seen some of these RC sites still selling 2c-b.

At the same time, since it is 2c-b, the authorities may just be saying it came from the internet because it is somewhat obscure. I have seen 2c-b available on the street many times.

i'd think 2c-b is difficult to find on the internet especially for a bunch of dumb kids. 2c-b also hasn't caused a serious issue like this in its history, so i think it's safe to assume it wasn't 2c-b.

2c-b has been illegal here but i've found sources for it anyway but way overpriced, risky and not worth it at all. If that's the case in the UK then why would anyone even bother buying 2c-b, it's not the greatest psych ever.

People love legend and mystery, I am pretty sure that is the main reason you hear of people who have no problems taking meth, cocaine, opiates, cannabis but also dabble in the RC's. Not out of necessity because of piss tests or fear of the law, but genuine interest.

I don't see how it is far fetched for 2CB, an illegal and fairly well known of drug to be seen available on the street from time to time. I am in Ontario, maybe you have some friends in ON, who have seen the 2CB caps and powder. I sure have, that's all I'm saying, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was available on the street in the UK.

At the same time, you can find pretty much anything on the net, I know of several people who have just got lucky and bought illegal drugs from RC suppliers or online "pharmacies"

They probably weren't fighting for their lives. I've passed out on DXM, or was just high, and if someone like my grandma is mad at me, she can call the cops and force me into detox or a 72 psychiatric hold. But the paramedics and doctors are tell me and her that I was "fighting for my life," and while she believes them, I know better.

News media and doctors and ambulance gossip BADLY. The cops probably just yelled at those kids, and sent them to the hospital, where, in America, if you're on drugs, they can bind you to the bed with restraints and force a catheter in you and force IV needles into you and leave you there for a few days. We try to punish drug use here? I assume it's the same over there.

My bet is that they got 25b-nbome or something like that. 2c-b has been used for many years now without much of an issue. Either that or they ended up taking some other random chemical.
agreed
it's worth taking note that the mail is a shockingly bad newspaper often filled with incredibly inept and lazy journalism, particularly with regards to drug matters

Three bailed after six taken to hospital after taking illegal drug in Newcastle student house

Northern Echo
2:48pm Sunday 13th January 2013

Three men arrested after six people were taken to hospital after taking an illegal drug, have been bailed by police. Officers were called to a student house in Ripon Gardens, Jesmond, Newcastle in the early hours of Friday morning after reports the occupants had overdosed on drugs. Yesterday (Saturday, January 12) one of the occupants, a student at Newcastle University, spoke out about the incident. The man, who did not want to be named, said: "It was all blown out of proportion. We were under the impression we knew what we were taking, we had previous knowledge of the substance however it did not seem to react with us as it had previously. People take risks everyday but this didn't work out as we had expected. We are really worried about the guy who is still in hospital, and worried what the consequences might be for him."

When police arrived at the property, they discovered six men, some Newcastle University students, aged between 19 and 22, had taken the drug 2CB, which had been ordered over the internet. One of the men remains in a critical condition in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. Two men, both aged 23, and a 20-year-old man, have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the the supply of a controlled drug and have been bailed pending further enquiries. Police said the drug was bought in a white powder form and some of it had been recovered. Cops have also released a picture of the recovered substance as they warned of the drug's dangers.

They recovered substance is believed to be 2CI, which is connected to the 2CB drug. The drug can also come in the form of small pills. Fearing more people may be tempted to try the drug, police have issued an alert to hospitals and partner agencies in the area.

even if it was 2c-i i don't know how they needed to be sent to hospital. I've done 100mg+ doses of 2c-i without any problems at all, many times. Unless they were all just freaking out and panicking in which case they should have just stayed home and popped some benzos. Inexperienced kids IMO.

2c-i is about as benign as a psychedelic gets.
