Just wanted to clearly and definitively address all of you who have been issuing forth tremendous support. Obviously I'm no longer at Teriyaki and I'm aware people have been wondering what the hell's going on, and where, if not there, I'm going. Well let me just say I love Teriyaki and will always enjoy playing there. You don't spend that amount of time (4 1/2 years) with a crew and not feel as though a part of you is still there, even if you are not in any corporeal sense.
All I knew in returning to melb was that I had a desire to do something more, to extend myself beyond being a resident at one club. Granted it's the strongest, biggest, toughest etc... techno club probably in the country; but even so, limiting myself to the role of resident no longer felt comfortable.
Even so I had not made a decision to leave Teriyaki. I had to augment my career and do something more; but this for me did not in and of itself mean I had to leave Teriyaki. That call was made by Dee Dee and Slack; the reasoning behind which is clear: they want a resident who will offer them absolute loyalty and whilst I was happy to do that before, I knew that to be true to myself now, I could not.
As a result, and as Dee Dee has already said elsewhere on this site I am no longer a resident. They will obviously still ask me back as a guest, and I will obviously acquiesce. As for the rest, well Pixie is the obvious replacement.
So what then am I doing? Playing a bloody hell of a lot of guest spots at present...check your local guides...

I have also agreed to head up a new saturday night called Protozoa on Duckboard Lane (off Flinders Lne) in the city. Well I'll be there for the first month anyway and we'll see how it goes. the emphasis for Protozoa is deep, driving and funky music played with poise and direction. Well that's what I;ll be doing anyway.
I've also agreed to a partial residency at Centriphugal (friday nights @ Deep 11) of course another tasty example of powerfully deep sound. I'll be there once a fortnight. Other than that I've still not ruled out starting my own club; but on that I'll keep you posted.
Now I've got all that out of the way, I'm brought to my mian purpose for posting this. Since I left Melb for Byron and during my time away and now since being back many of you have taken the time to post messages of, well everything from encouragement, regret, excitement, enthusiasm, support... all of it support; and, well it hasn't gone un-noticed. Dee Dee sent me link to this site not long after I left (for Byron) and I was staggered at the amount of feeling people had unveiled at my departure. And again last week another friend told me to check some of the opinion posted once it became public I was no longer at Teriyaki. Again I was humbled and deeply touched.
there was a reason why i came back to melbourne. you people get it; you understand the music, you feel it and you distinguish yourselves with your unabashed love of it. There is no greater pleasure as a DJ than to play to people such as you; and I couldn't deprive myself of this any longer.
Again thankyou to all of you who have responded to me; variously on the floor, backstage, on line, on the phone, on paper, on Bluelight; and let me say now that contrary to what many of you think, every smile, every word, every nuance of appreciation that any of you ever offer makes a huge amount of difference to me. i do what I do for the love of it and because I believe this culture offers a cohesive positive benefit to our society. We can use the glimpse we get into our ancient nature via dance to penetrate the stifling homogeny of contemporary western society. Believe it people, its true. everytime you walk out onto the pavement at 7.15am and challenge the desesitized stare of the beaurocrats filing into work, you are bucking the system, you are pushing upstream, you are going against the grain. together we issue forth the challenge. Together. And for that reason, everytime someone has something to offer me, i am eager to hear it. Anything less is not good enough. Everytime I hear that what i do on stage has a primary affect off stage, I am touched and I am humbled. What better in life than feeling that you are contributing to making a difference? Nothing. And it couldn't be done if not together.
With the greatest love and respect,
Simon Slieker

WOW! Nice post Slieker! And Thank you so much for providing us with such awesome music so consistently, and for being a part of the Teriyaki phenomenon, as well as the many other contributions you've made... I know that both Melbourne and Brisbane have enjoyed your sets many times (and I was lucky enough to catch you while I was up in Byron Bay one time... hehe, travelling 2000km to hear the same music I can hear at home... gotta love it
smile.gif
) And thanks for coming back to Melbourne, I'll havta checkout Protozoa sometime...
Hmm... bk obviously hasn't seen this thread yet, or just hasn't had the time to write a reply... or is too busy hyperventilating from excitement...

The world needs more DJ's like you.
smile.gif
It's great to actually be able to go up and have a chat to you guys.
btw: I was the guy on saturday that Shadders introduced to you (along with blue kitten).
Keep up the good work, and hoepfully we'll see you up here again soon.
Maxi
ps: i think you really made sarah's night aswell... she wouldn't stop talking about you!

firstly, thanks sleiker. you make me feel proud to walk out onto swanston st. on a friday morning and slowly pedal mah pushy up the pavement, weaving in and out of black suits, smiling uncontrollably at the motherfuckers as i contemplate their meaningless existence. you are the dude that taught me to dance, taught me to smile at people that i used to think looked odd, and taught me that i CAN go to uni with no sleep.
smile.gif
thanks man.
secondly, i'm always one to crap on about how good melbourne music and aus. dj's are. and often sit on here and rant about how much people crap on about internationals because they only come out for one night, when far better music is being played every week... and i think you just confirmed that for a lot of people by what you said. everyone go and read through your GU and ministry and whatever sleeve notes, read what the dj says, thinks, and plays. then consider sleiker.
nuff said

thanks man.

Shit a brick.
smile.gif
that's exactly what I was talking about. You guys are awesome and have my utmost respect. What can I say that I haven't said already? Probably heaps, but I'll limit it to; I'm a very fortunate man to be at liberty to witness such appreciation, and not have to have died to earn the priviledge
wink.gif

Shadrach: nice to have met you even though it was a small distance from the car (in melb)
wink.gif

Slieker: u are very fortunate coz u are real and the music u play says alot about a person - one that puts emotions in his music!

Wow.
What a great read. I got goosebumps toward the end of that post Slieker.
I don't want to ruin it with too many words.

bk has been/still is very sick

and working fucked up shifts so she just hasn't had the time to reply (especially when a certain little brother hogs the computer!!)
anywayz, slieker - thankYOU so much for what you have given us. what i have found during my time in the "scene" is that the dj's that i admire, like and make an effort to go see are not the big name internationals but home-grown aussie talent. and that's not because i think international stars are crap (i mean they must be at least a little bit alright if they get jetsetted around the globe!) but what really attracts me to certain dj's is their attitude towards the music and the crowd and the reasons for why they're spinning in the first place. to see a dj interact with the crowd, chatting to people, or on the dancefloor, and not "above" it all just makes my night --> the vibe this creates isn't one of us/them but a real feeling of everyone altogether.
and this is probably why i didn't leave the dancefloor (except to strech my poor legs!) last saturday night at mantra. not only was i loving the tunes (hehe, i only came to see you coz jerox said you were going to play my beat and dream on!!!) but also the great feeling of everyone else there loving it too (including you - i saw that grin!) so thankyou again for some absolutely wonderful nights and best of luck where-ever you spin (i'm sure i'll be seeing you soon again).......

Oh - it's great to hear feedback from you Sleiker, it's good to know to love flows both ways.
Anyways, I haven't got much more to add to this thread cause it's all been said. But I do have one thing to add - I for one will be making my way to Protoza to see the Super Sleiker Spin. See you guys there! Finally, something to do on a Saturday nite..

Shut up. If I wanted to listen to an arsehole, I would have farted.

Simon, its great to see that the door swings both ways...nice post. Your talents are always welcome in the great city of melbourne (although I too have left.. but I shall return!)

fucken YEAH!
what an amazingly enlightening post. Utmost respect man, utmost respect. I love your music, and your contribution to the ever-growing music culture in Melbourne (And Australia!)
After just coming back from Bali, what you say in absolutely correct. Music is a part of life that binds us all, and something that seems to have been forgotton in Australia for a while now. In Bali, music is everywhere. It surrounds everyone, and everyone is actively involved with it, and I think the results are absolutely obvious. They are such a peaceful society.
Anyway, great post, thanks Slieker, best of luck in all your decisions and paths!
