I have always thought sublingual meant to just have it in your mouth, which is how I have always taken and just took my clonazepam(klonopin). Does it really matter effect wise if I dissolve the pills over my tounge, instead of under??

Supposedly it works faster if you hold it under the tongue, but with klonopin I never noticed a difference in the slightest

Yes it makes a difference. Sublingual administration isn't just dissolving it in your mouth.. the point of it and where the increased bioavailabilty comes from is the tinny little veins under your tongue that absorb the medication. Just having a pill in your mouth will still allow that to happen but not as much, which is why they tell you to position the pills directly under your tongue because those are where the blood vessels are that absorb it.

I'm surprised you can stand dissolving them in your mouth OP, with the bitter taste and all. If you do that, I guess a miniscule amount will make it through those membranes under your tongue, but the majority will go down the back of your throat. You may find the effects kick in slightly faster, as the pill is already dissolved as it enters the stomach, but it won't improve the intensity of effects ie BA. In the past I've found crunching up the pills and washing it down with hot coffee or other drinks can make the effects kick in a lot sooner than by swallowing them whole.

BTW does a pill have to be in a sublingual formulation for it to work that way, or can it be done with any pill?

there isnt a huge difference, but yes there is a higher concentration of blood vessels under the tongue as opposed to on top
