Dirty Pictures: Documentary on the Shulgins

^Totally agree with CatFish. It was such a private thing, you would imagine it was for the shulgin enthusiasts... but it wasnt.

And yes, maybe 40% of this stuff i saw on youtube prior. The stuff with his son being juxtaposed (in front all his nuts and bolts) with shulgin was interesting. they made him look kinda inferior, but he just did his own thing in much the same manner as shulgin (except focusing on tools rather than psychoactives). I liked the subtle humor

I really loved this film, I thought they did a great job with the editing.
I was really happy to see an exploration of this great man, his partner found later in life, as well as his work--particularly because this film did not come out of the drug culture. What I took away from it was the filmmakers' respect for the fact that Shulgin is definitely a living genius of our time who managed to live his life and conduct his work on his own terms. It is also fairly clear to me that we are going to be seeing the benefits of Shulgin's work long after this great man has left us. We may not even realize the significance of his contributions until much later.

Yes, for people very familiar with Shulgin, Pihkal and Tihkal--many of the anecdotes will be familiar. It is awesome to put faces to the fictionalized names from these texts and to hear the stories told by the people themselves, as they experienced them.

Recommended, I will be buying the DVD to support the film. I torrent most things but this is worth supporting with my $$.

so i know pure bumps are typically frowned upon, but i think a lot of people are probably wondering if there's any news to be told here that hasn't yet?

I just emailed the sales department from the main website, just asking about the dvd release. If I get an answer I shall pop it on here. :)

Digging PiHKAL and TiHKAL lately (finding PiHKAL particularly fascinating at the moment). I love the way the Shulgins write with such consciousness, depth, and passion.

Considering buying a couple additional copies to donate to the local library, but thinking that they may discard the books if they only read the summary on the back (worth a shot though, eh?). It seems people are turning on at an incredible rate lately (scan through trip reports and see how many are of psychedelics).

The film looks excellent. How could it not be?

This is the reply I got:

Hello Sir

Thank you for your interest in the film. Dirty Pictures is not yet available in DVD. It will be in the near future. The film is securing distribution as we speak.

Can't wait to see it. First time seeing this thread - posting to subscribe.

I've always been fascinated with the people behind the scenes of things I'm fascinated with. Artists, musicians, directors, chemists....

Shulgin seems like one of those people that are inspiring to hear talk about their work. `Brainy` folks especially tickle me. Feynman comes to mind. So smart but not in any kind of condescending way. Their passion is infectious.

Ann admitted to having written her share on MDMA. It's on a podcast somewhere during Q&A-her routine was to take a dose and spend the trip writing, which she would do quite often. Kinda sheds light on the whole thing in a funny way (The way she describes Sasha's sexy abs in great detail, for example.) =D

Saw the movie in NYC.. was such a beautiful look at Shulgin's life. Now I'm doing my thesis on drug arrests and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can re-watch that scene where the DEA busts into his home? Would love to get another look at the DEA's actual on the ground workings.

thatneuro- thank you for contributing to something great! I just saw Dirty Pictures a few hours ago, still reflecting on what I saw. The movie definitely humanizes a greater-than-life figure for the most of us, in a good way. It was good of you to including some footage of Dr. Shulgin's contemporaries.

The one minor thing that bugged me about the film, though, was a talk that Dr. Shulgin talked about receptors as if they were vestigial and had no endogenous ligands, as if they were just sitting around inactive and waiting for exogenous activation. This is totally bunk in all cases I know- I'm guessing the segment they grabbed was just out of context; Sasha knows his neurochem. Any ideas?
